Lighting would have to be completely re-programmed I think though if this were to work.
Not necessarily 'completely re-programmed'.... but the shading might look a bit off / goofy. Some complexities would have to be taken into consideration, of course...such as how light diffuses now as opposed to how it would diffuse under a directional lighting system.
It would actually be pretty easy to figure out a conical (technically pyramidal) section and have the light level degrade over distance as it currently does in the game (instead of spherically...it's actually move of a skewed cube than it is spherical, but that just sounds weird).
Shading and shadowing would work similar to how it does with lighting now, which is less than sophisticated (mostly relegated to just sunlight and straight down as it is).

Yeah but if light was only put into a single direction.. wouldn't we need say.. four redstone lamps to have light in the 4 directions? And since there isn't a diagonal in minecraft... how would that work?

There are diagonals... just not frequently used, and mostly related to MOB activity (such as fireballs, splash potion trajectories, and arrows)
However, how would light be calculated within this area? Probably similar to how it is calculated now, each block out is -1 illumination from the block before it.
Would you need 4 redstone lamps to have light in 4 directions? Not necessarily. I think the suggestion was to add flood lights, not change the behavior of existing lighting... and since the redstone lamp emits light in all directions around it, even if you allowed covering the other sides for directional lighting purposes, you would still have to cover the sides you did not want to emit light.

Yeah. But I thought it was pretty much trying to change the way light worked.
But I guess if it's just a particular light emitting block then yeah sure.
Cause like I said before it'd be cool to see directional lighting going upward. I have some skyscrapers I've built that are pretty good in my opinion. So.. yeah.

The crafting would be a redstone lamp with 3 sticks under it an iron block and an iron fence.
It would need to be powered and stand 2 blocks tall like a door.
It would light the blocks to the front and sides of the base block but not behind.
I won't go into complicated uses but it could highlight creations and it could be used to force mobs to spawn in designated areas.
Mostly for decoration purposes though. As I could see a good way to have some of my cityscape lit up at night with upward lighting.
