It'd be great to have Barbwire to put around your compounds to guard against mobs like zombies, etc. Or, perhaps even animals that are for whatever reason fixated on going up to fences and jumping up and down for half an hour.
Just maybe make some iron bars, then just use another ingot or so to make barbed wire attached to it...
Or maybe even just have barbed wire that's a separate item that you can just lay on the ground then combine with in the crafting table to make barbedwire fences.
Can't put cacti right next to each other and they are fairly easy to mine.
You can't put cacti on anything other than sand either.
Yeah why I suggested this. Cause.. yeah you can make a "wall" of them.. but they have to be in this wavy pattern sorta.
and if you put ANYTHING beside a cactus regardless of anything the cactus dies.... it's stupid.
Barbed wire sounds good to me.
Maybe have a system with redstone where you can electrify it?
We could add restone current to ironbars and it could be an electric fence. Then we could have some real fun You could turn off the fence by disconnecting the redstone.
And barbed wire fences would need their own texture. But I don't think they should be made out of iron.

These ideas are great as well. But, maybe you can turn off and on the electrified barbed wire with a lever.
I don't think Minecraft is in the past as much as it is your guy doesn't have what it takes to make advanced things, making it feel like it is in the past. If we can make iron bars, we can make barbed wire.
I have no idea if you can craft these, but what about Cobwebs, sorry if you cant, but I am making props for a PvP map, and I find its easy to make barbed wire by doing this (let "I" be wood fence block, and "x" be cobwebs) IxxxxI or IxxxxxI. If this doesnt work, sorry, I dont know if you can make cobwebs in survival because I never have the need to.
Great idea, but i think to get the spikes for the wire you have to mine cacti which will give you thorns then you craft thorns with string and you get 16 barbed wires

I don't really like the idea of just adding a new item 'thorns' in order to make this work... especially since you could skip the thorn harvesting step and just use a Cactus block in lieu of the thorns in your recipe (just assume that thorn harvesting is a part of the process).
1 iron ingot (or string) surrounded by 8 cacti blocks yields 16 barbed wire coil blocks that will attach to adjacent blocks similar to fence posts or glass panes.
2 different types would have 2 different durabilities... and if it was made of string, it could be flammable as well.
Barbed wire futuristic thing you know. in the past werent barbed wire, and minecraft is the past.
Although Minecraft has a lot of the Middle Ages 'feel' to it... the primary character Steve skin, sports a partially tucked in v neck tee shirt and what appear to be jeans, can make and use dynamite, and is capable of constructing fairly complex 'electronic' logic circuits via redstone.
Past and future is unclear where MC is concerned... but there is a certain 'feel' to the environment, and I don't think this suggestion takes away from that feel, but rather adds to it instead.

The idea of electrifying iron fences/barbed wire, etc. via redstone is deserving of a separate thread... and I have mixed feelings on that one.
1, IMO, it does take away from the MC ambiance (radically alters it outside of what the current environmental 'feel' is).
2. There is no real indication that redstone actually has a 'harmful current' to it. the assumption is that since redstone technology shares a lot of properties with electronic circuitry, it should share other properties as well (such as carrying a voltage and a charge that can be used to harm other players or MOBs) when in reality, redstone may simply be magical in nature, after all, you really don't even need a true power source to put a redstone current on a line of dust... all it takes is a simple lever or button. It doesn't really create a circuit like electricity does (the redstone current doesn't have to return to source or ground in order to function as electricity is required to do).
3. I was fascinated by the industrial craft mods, the redstone 2 mods, and the like... so I would like to see a more industrial/modern setting version of MC as a side game, but I wouldn't want to alter the current ambiance of this game to become a new game altogether.
But I digress, better this (electrifying) topic be discussed in a separate thread and resume the focus on the OP's barbed wire suggestion.
Electric fence sounds cool as well. It should have infinite distance though. Like if you have a fence that is thirty blocks long, you can have one source power the entire thing.

Longer distance, I'd concur with, Infinite? no... and here's why. As soon as you get a redstone activated electric fence into the game, the next thing some will ask for is an electric current detector so they can trigger some other redstone technology when the fence is turned on.
Now you have a 'wire' that can carry a redstone current an unlimited distance to handle redstone mechanisms clear across the map (theoretically) into 'inactive' chunks (chunks too far away to support hostile MOB or redstone circuitry).
Several mods will let current travel 10x (or more) further than through redstone dust, but it does eventually deplete in those models as well. (say a 15 strength redstone current adds 150 Electrical Units/EU to a fence or wire, that can now deplete at 1 EU per square traveled, and still be limited but not as limited as the redstone dust alone).

Stay fluffy~

? How can you tell it was in the past?

Is it though? It could be the year 3500 and he's stuck on an island with nothing for all we know.
Mobs dont have swords, I guess he is also looking for it in PvP? So can you get cobwebs using silk touch or shears?
Umm... I guess pvp.. But yeah the initial suggestion was just based for normal mobs etc.
perhaps?
