Since Compass' have no purpose other than.. "Point north", and no one uses them.. Why not have them point in the direction of where mobs are.
If you're mining, it could be like a safety tool, or for those pesky monsters you can never find hidden in your walls somewhere of your house it would guide you in the direction of where they're located, and you can clear the way.
Also, it doesn't point north, it points to your spawn.
Not knowing something doesn't make someone stupid, just unaware. To think otherwise... that's the stupid idea.. Lol.
Who cares about where our spawn is? If we have any sort of memory, we'd know that our spawn is always where our bed is where we last slept.
Which, usually is in whatever shelter you decided to build or mould, therefore is served as a directional point for a tool that has no use other than... apparently pointing to our spawn (according to you). Lol.
Might come in handy if you died and lost your map and somehow broke your bed so you spawned in the middle of no where... But.. Oh.. that's right.. You spawn with nothing after you died!!
1. Compasses do have a purpose - they are used to create replacement maps or create nether maps in the nether.
2. The compass needle does not point north; it points to your spawn (which enables you to get back to your spawn point if you are lost).
3. Compasses would have difficulty pointing to where the mobs are since mobs do spawn all around the player.
In which case.. maps need to be made way easier.
I don't see why a compass is needed to make a map.. Maps should just be 8 pieces of paper and an ink sack. Why need Redstone, Iron, and paper? It's a waste of material.
Well, not redstone, but I'd rather not waste the equivalent of a shovel and a pickaxe on a tool that has virtually no use. What I was thinking was.. It would simply point to one monster/mob. That's it, and until you kill that monster/mob it keeps pointing at that one.
I like the idea but I think this should just be a whole other item that can be crafted from a compass. I find the current compass useful to me.
Well I'm open to it being a new item.. But.. If it were to be a different item...
Then I'd love to see it not have to be used in the process of making a map.
Compasses are used for direction to spawn and in map creation.
We're just spoiled because we spawn with a map, which downgrades the use of a compass.
Take a compass into the Nether. That's how I imagine your idea working in-game....
And you appear to have nothing better to do then scrape the bottom of the barrel in posting to degrade what others think. That's how I imagine you use these forums.

That, or which ever one is closer maybe?
Awe, quit your whining... I'm pretty sure that Mojang's intention was to make the map something you wouldn't really want to lose too frequently, so they made it cost a few resources to make a new one.
Even so, it really isn't all that expensive - 4 iron and 1 redstone to make the compass and then 8 pieces of paper to turn it into a map. That's only 1 more iron than it takes to make a bucket and many people burn up buckets in their furnace by using lava to fuel it. Also, most people wind up acquiring way too much redstone... way more than they use. I know I've thrown a ton or two of it into the lava pit just to avoid it taking up too much space in chests.
Also, anyone who has done orienteering in real life knows that you use a compass in conjunction with your map to navigate.
Well... I for one support the idea of a separate MOB detector that only points to the next closest MOB within 128 blocks... not using the compass for it, though. Maybe even be able to have an interface where you can turn on/off certain types of MOB detection (ie. villager, passive, psuedo-passive aka. wild, and hostile/aggressive) when you equip it and look at it directly.
Not every MOB is going to be the exact same distance from you, so spinning like it does in the Nether wouldn't be a normal occurrence (unless there are no MOBs to detect nearby), it may bounce between 2 or 3 if you get close to a few that alternate whichever gets closer to you at the moment, but as you get closer to one MOB in particular, it will start focusing on that one.
Of course having such a device makes MOB hunting easier for tracking purposes, but it can also be used defensively, and warn you when something may be flanking you or when coming up behind you. for this reason, it may take away some of the overall challenge of the game, but it would require you to use up a slot doing so, which some people may prefer to leave open to be able to haul more stuff.
I also support the idea that the compass points toward the nearest Nether portal while in the Nether, this makes some sense and that way at least leads toward something that can get you in the same realm as your spawn point.... and point to either the Ender Dragon or the Exit Portal while in the End.

I usually just write down my coordinates for important things like nether portals and end portals, so I'm indifferent about an item that points toward them. I like the idea though of a monster detector, but instead of pointing at where it is it could be something that alarms you to the presence of a monster. I.E., some sort of device that starts flashing when a monster is within a 10 block radius of you, or it could alert you when a monster is in an adjacent chunk. The flashing would only really be beneficial when it's in your hotbar of course.
Or we could just make sure we are always wearing armor, that will solve problems with dying.
This is something I think could work:
Make an item that detects only one type of monster, say an Enderman or some other sort of important monster. It would follow the direction of the most recently interacted with Enderman, but would lose its 'connection' after being so many blocks away.

Awe, quit whining about me whining.
I've never used a compass to navigate really.. I've tried and they don't seem to have any purpose to do so. . I've never seen the purpose of it. I always go by using a map and memory of where I need to go. Or I make waypoint towers for special points (In forest areas, etc).
You're right about the redstone part, and to a lesser extent Iron. But I'd rather a map be made from a piece of paper and 8 ink sacks.
I lose my map a lot.. But it's never intentionally. I don't just go up to a lava pit and throw it in. But there are some in game issues, such as the many reasons that minecraft lags and fall into lava pits etc.
Since I don't play in my worlds very much, I'm relying on my friends' connections. So, I'd rather not suck up the iron that's supposed to be divided amongst the four of us.
And people who use buckets of lava to smelt stuff.. I don't know what they're thinking cause that's sort of a waste of iron I think. Unless you have absolutely nothing else, but even then I'd rather just chop down a tree and use planks.

I can agree sort of... But I don't know how but I've been killed by creepers with a fullset of diamond armor before. So, I don't know.
And walked in lava for 2-3 seconds and burnt to death.

Thoughts?
Also how would this work if you you had numerous mobs around your area? How would the needle distinguish what mob it would point to?
and your safety tool while mining is your ears listen for footsteps
^^ This...
It sounds like you should be suggesting a MOB Detector of some sort, rather than changing the functionality of the current Compass.
