I've seen requests for more armor so many times I thought I'd put some thought into it and come up with some realistic suggestions and open it up for additional ideas from all of you.
Obsidian armor is a common request. I'll start by saying NO! I don't think if it takes a diamond pick axe to mine it that you could feasibly shape or carry obsidian armor and considering it would be a tier above diamond, it would force a remake of the entire game.
8/10 for creativity 3/10 for practicality.
Bone/ spike armor has been suggested that deals damage to the attacker. It's called thorns enchantment.
0/10 for both creativity and practicality.
Magical armors. We can enchant all the armors we have / will get so why would we add an armor that gives only enchantments?
4/10 for creativity 3/10 for practicality
Now for some of my ideas.
Gilded armor and studded armor
Studded armor would be crafted with leather armor and an iron ingot. It would add one defense more to leather armor and keep the color added to it.
Gilded armor would be crafted from iron armor with gold ingot. It would add some flair to iron armor ad boost the enchant-ability a bit.
If you have an armor idea and don't mind constructive honest criticism post it here and ill rate it for practicality and originality.
A new tier of armor that should be added would be Steel armor. It would be between Chain and Diamond. The ingots could be made from Iron ingots and coal.
The way the ingots are made is you smelt iron into an ingot, then you re-smelt it in the furnace to make a Steel ingot.
The armor could be made from Steel ingots and Leather.

6/10 for originality. I like the tier placement and simplicity but it's almost like your saying "it's iron but different and better"
6/10 for practicality. Maybe steel can only be smelted with lava but for all practical purposes iron is steel in minecraft.
I would be more than happy to see a new armor added into minecraft. One of the options was the gilded armor and i love the idea but i think it should be more vanity rather than it adding any other bonus. Also I think the recipe should be there armor piece in the middle surrounded by gold ingots.
Also for a personal suggestion, I would like to see other tiers of armor. One thing would be padded armor witch would be an armor piece surrounded by wool in a crafting bench. This would allow you to reduce a little bit of damage and make the Armour last just a tad longer. This way the armor is still balanced but it is still worth it.
Another idea would be to make kits that would allow you to add things onto your armor (all except leather). One could be a spike kit, It would add spikes onto your armor that would do a fraction of the damage dealt to you by an enemy to the enemy. It would be made in different tiers or steps like book shelves and it would have to be made out of the same material as the armor. The fist step would be to put 2 iron/gold/diamond ingots in a crafting table to make 1 spike (you would have to make 8 for everything and one for a helmet kit, 3 for a chest plate kit, 2 for legging kit, and 2 for a boots kit). Then you would take a chest and surround it in the required amount of spikes for that piece of armor. Lastly you have to take the kit and use it with the armor.
Also on a side note, I would also love an armor stand added into minecraft.
Actually, Obsidian armor + gear is a reasonable idea but it will be below Diamond and only slight above Iron. (For example, Full Iron Armor gives like 7.5 armor, I think. Obsidian would give 8 armor while Diamond stays at 10). Obsidian's health would be half of Diamond's health. Obsidian tools would be weaker than Diamond but still able to mine Obsidian (just slower pace). Etc.
Just saying... I support Obsidian gear cause it would actually look pretty cool and Obsidian is an infinity resource so we wouldn't have to worry about running out of resource for weapons+armor.
Note: Not trying to be original here, just saying my opinion on Obsidian.
Also, the Steel armor idea is alright but I think Iron does the metal job just fine on it's own.

Studded Armor 3/10 for creativity 8/10 for practicality
Studded and ring armor are actual medieval armor types... so not really an original idea, but fairly practical overall.
Gilded Armor 6/10 for creativity 0/10 for practicality
I actually like this idea, but again, not totally original in concept as it has been used in the past, no armor type should modify enchant-ability, and since there are no armor modifiers suggested, there really isn't any practical reason to do this, but I'll give it a 9/10 for aesthetics.

My idea will take the world by storm as it completely unheard of and will be of great use within Minecraft.
Ballistic Armour.
Made from iron Ingots, string and possible a sewing needle this armour will have greater resistance against explosions as well as ranged projectiles.
No longer will you have to hide in fear from a barrage of snowballs because you'll be suited up in the finest ballistics gear Behemoth has to offer.
Available in all sizes.
The way the ingots are made is you smelt iron into an ingot, then you re-smelt it in the furnace to make a Steel ingot.
The armor could be made from Steel ingots and Leather.
10/10 for originality (even large people don't like getting hit by snowballs despite popular opinion)
10/10 for practicality (you can totaly buy blast proof string at your local hardwear store)

Not sure about the other one.
