What I'm reading here is that ash should be added. I like it. It's another renewable resource to collect. Maybe we could get some brewing potential from this ash. This ash could be dyed and turned into paint that could be used to color wood or stone blocks?
As far as the biome goes I think it should be a feature of a biome like a crevice or cave. This would balance the worlds a bit to avoid a complete volcano seed that's impossible to play on.
I love the idea. I find volcanos fascinating. But instead of finding lots of new materials maybe it would be better to adjust the proportion of resources that occur there. Volcanos biomes, for example could have a higher occurrence of diamonds, since diamonds in real life are pulled up from deep in the mantle by volcanos. But dig at your owl peril. The Volcanos would have many chambers of lava and fragile areas were the rock is thin (like crust on lava) and it would be very hazardous to mine there. Maybe there could be things like toxic clouds of gas (fog) that could suffocate you in the same way water does. It would be a very dangerous place to be, but it could be very rewarding if you manage to survive.
you had a good idea... until it was ruined by the gas/fog

This would be too dangerous and nobody would want to go their. I understand that this is supposed to be a challenging biome but this is way too over-the-top and OP.
I don't think that a 'biome' should have a portal to the Nether, and Ghasts (baby or otherwise) should probably remain in the Nether. Magma Cubes I can see as well as Whither Skeletons... I'd rather see the distinctions between the realms, and a biome by itself should not be overtly crossing those boundaries too much.
I like the mixing ash with water to make clay idea. I don't think we need a special wooden bucket added... especially since our standard iron bucket is capable of hauling around a lava source block. But we also have glass bottles that could be used already in the game.
What would be the use of the sulfuric acid? Potion making of some sort?
I'm ok with some more gold/diamond closer to the surface in this biome as long as it remains at least as rare as the deeper minerals and doesn't run in veins, and runs more of a risk in digging into lava flows (making easier and safer for the deeper mining)... also, random blocks of obsidian could make it challenging to mine through certain areas without a diamond pickax.
Haven't you ever noticed that the Nether on this game is basically the core of a minecraft world. All 6 sides of the Nether are surrounded by bedrock volcanoes bring lava/magma to the surface from the core of a world. I thought this being minecraft that volcanoes being connected to the nether would be a no brainer.
I know that iron buckets can haul lava though in real life you wouldn't want to hold it with bare hands. Also in real life acid eats metal which is why I brought up wooden buckets. Also not sure but I think the PC version has wooden buckets. As to the use of Acid it could be used to make a deadly moat around your house without setting it on fire. Or as you mentioned it could be used for potion making. As for the characteristics of Acid it would flow like water and and do slow damage. If you get out it would still do damage to you for like 10 seconds after you get out. Anything dropped in the acid would be destroyed like with lava. The acid could eat through metal blocks like iron blocks, bars, doors, anvils and iron ore.
1. Totally agree with you. If half of the nether is moved to the overworld... what's the point of the nether then? lol
2. I like the ash ideas being thrown around. The snow/rain being switched to an ash fall is very creative. I think it would be nice to add things (clay and more) that can be done with the ash. Adding another bucket or different glass bottles are not necessary, agreed.
3. I think the acid is just totally unnecessary. It wouldn't serve a real purpose in game and would like to see the ash/lava be expanded on and perfected then adding minor lame things.
4. I don't know how I feel about adding more precious ores to the biome. I think I would rather see a new block (something that is exclusive to that biome... Marble?) then bringing more materials to the area. Then again, I don't like seeing random new things added that serve no purpose... so maybe just leave it completely alone and make it a normal biome layout. REALLY thinking hard about this post though!
1. Never said the nether would be brought to the biome just a few of the MOBs maybe. Even then they wouldn't be in large numbers they'd just mill around by the rift/portal area.
2. Someone already suggested an Ash Golem which I expanded on. Can't think of any other creative uses for it.
3. Already covered this, acid is hardly lame and it would have uses.
4. Whats the point of adding a new biome if it doesn't have anything new in it? Here is a desert biome pretend it's a volcano. The only other thing I can think of adding would be Pumice stone. Which are the rocks that volcanoes hurl out into the sky when they are erupting. But pumice stone would pretty much be a decorative block and probably look very similar to gravel graphics-wise.

i dont think you realize a wooden bucket is even weaker then iron. put acid in that and your done for. not to mention the fact that we dont even need acid, we have lava. plus acid wouldn't even make sense in this game, imagine acid on a volcano. Sulfuric acid is made up of Sulfur Dioxide which is burned to become sulfur Trioxide which dissolves to be made Sulfuric Acid. if acid could break iron then it could break anything else really. if you want to get technical acid could eventually destroy bedrock as well. acid will be one of the worst things they could ever put in minecraft. and for #4 we're are already set with the idea. Lava, Ash, possibly obsidian, dyeing ash.

I agree, since wood is weaker than iron, it wouldn't make a difference on which bucket you put it in.

Reiterating what I said before: I don't think that ANY 'biome' should have a portal, of any kind, including to the Nether.
To me, it doesn't matter if the Nether is 'like' the core of a volcano, when you say 'nether portal' I'm envisioning the vertical obsidian frame with a mystical blue glowing door that dimensionally transports you to another mystical blue glowing door set within an obsidian frame on the other side.
If you want a way to get to the nether from the volcanic biome, then maybe have a column of lava source blocks that go down to layer 0, and if a player 'swims' through this below the layer 0 level, they are transported to a matching column of lava in the nether at just below the highest layer of bedrock. (Do you have lots of potions of fire resistance?) Me? I'll stick to the portals, thank you very much.
I know that iron buckets can haul lava though in real life you wouldn't want to hold it with bare hands. Also in real life acid eats metal which is why I brought up wooden buckets. Iron buckets can't haul lava in real life at all..... they would melt.... instantly.... real lava in a metal bucket would melt the bucket faster than any acid could dissolve it... and wood is typically even more vulnerable to acids than metal is. Glass is the only really safe container for a really strong acid, and we have glass bottles already. Again, I don't see the need for a wooden bucket, and I don't see a problem using a bucket that you can haul lava around in either. (Not everything in the game has to reflect reality).
I love this idea... I had an idea for volcanoes a while ago so it's cool to see that I wasn't the only one.
I do really like the idea of a separate biome or island, but I also like the idea of having volcanoes as naturally occurring formations built into the plains or extreme hills biomes. One person suggested there be both active and dormant or extinct volcanoes. When the active volcanoes erupt, it could trigger the ash fall, so it doesn't have to be a completely separate weather pattern exclusive to that area. It can still rain when it rains everywhere else, but it will be ash every time it erupts. I'm not a code gal so I don't know if this would be immensely harder on the code to be able to do this. I also really like the idea of the erupted lava cooling into igneous rock which can then be smelted into marble, but it would have to look unique so it can be used as a building block without being mistaken for Quartz. There are a couple proposed blocks for pc version - andesite, diorite, and granite (article here) starting with combining cobblestone and nether quartz. If these get developed in pc we would likely see them in the xbox version. I'm no geology expert but if those blocks are added, they might be able to somehow tie into the volcanic materials in the area (as naturally occurring instead of just crafted) if they have any volcanic connection IRL.
As for mineral rarity, I agree that diamonds, gold, and possibly emeralds should be more common here and in a greater range of levels higher up, but they should only spawn in veins of 1 to not eliminate the need for traditional cave mining. There should also be a higher likelihood for lava lakes and pools to be under the surface, making mining more dangerous. Then of course you never know when the volcano will erupt.
Everyone has such great ideas and I do hope this gets the developer's attention and gets considered. However I think it would be more likely to see it emerge on the pc first because of the restrictions in processing power on the xbox. Plus with the latest big update to pc, they added a ton of new biomes, so something like this may have already crossed their minds. Here's to hoping!
1. Never said the nether would be brought to the biome just a few of the MOBs maybe. Even then they wouldn't be in large numbers they'd just mill around by the rift/portal area.
-Didn't catch the sarcasm huh? Still no, It serves no legitimate purpose. Why go to the nether when I can get all mob drops I need, netherrack, and lava after a time? They might not be in large numbers, but there really isn't a reason they need to be there. You argue the other way which is fine, but this does more harm to the mechanics than helping. Regular overworld mobs should be the only ones that spawn in the overworld.
2. Someone already suggested an Ash Golem which I expanded on. Can't think of any other creative uses for it.
Ash block, Fertilizer, Ash Golem, Ash based potions, create a dye, colored ash, placing it like snow, ash-balls... getting really deep: weapon repair and polishing, repelling insects (spiders), pressure plates, fences, stairs, slabs?
3. Already covered this, acid is hardly lame and it would have uses.
Like? As far as this post goes, all I have seen is you saying, "it can be used in potions" or "use it for a moat." Please elaborate on your statements because your not supporting them... How much is slow damage? What kind of potions: lingering damage? Armor destruction? I feel that it is just way too overpowered... It can destroy some of the most powerful blocks, flows as fast as water, destroys items like lava, can be poured and picked up, aaaaaaaand does lasting damage after exposure. In my opinion, it doesn't fit into the scheme of minecraft. When we start getting guns and cars... maybe we will think acid. Or not, would be fine with me. The thinking up a new bucket idea was lame also. Don't tell me you believed you could have a bucket of lava in real life as well... lol However, finding the light in the dark it did make me wonder why we can't scoop lava with an empty bottle? haha
I'll accept this one as a misunderstanding of my post... I would like to see location and quantity of ores in the biome to remain the same. I would like to see more blocks and features added however! I would like to see a Pumice or Marble and Ash added, as well as different weathers and features. I just don't agree with the nether features or the unnecessary features like Acid, new containers, (dangerous gas from another post) that change minecraft's mechanics.
Okay so pretty much everyone likes the idea of a volcanic biome but wants barely any of it's features. First off the Acid can form in volcanic regions. While it can destroy wood it eats through metal faster. An iron bucket could hold lava in real life if made properly, but like I said you wouldn't want to hold it. The buckets in the game look more like steel or galvanized steel then actual iron buckets. Look at a cast iron pan or bathtub if you want to know what iron looks like. Cast iron is used in smelting other metals I know I've made lead sinkers for fishing.
As to the nether rift/portal I give up on that idea since everyone wants to be a stick in the mud. I'm done arguing for the features I brought up. They are things volcanic areas have in real life (with the portal/rift being an exception) so I don't understand the issues you have with them.
I've tried thinking of ideas but I keep getting "that's not enough detail" or "that's useless". To me it sounds like you want a stone mountain with some lava dribbling down the side. With a few new decorative blocks and ash which can apparently do everything under the digital sun.

Maybe their can be a new "obsidian bucket" or something that can pick up acid without the bucket being destroyed? Something along those lines maybe?
Acid could actually work really well, it could be used for potions and as others said, corrode things that lava can't burn. It could be green or purple to distinguish it etc.
In my opinion having a volcanic biome would create so many new possibilities in Minecraft. Yeah there are some problems with it like it burning down forests when it spawns but they can all be solved easily... Also I know people have been saying it's too similar to the Nether but when you think about it, there's not actually any "volcanoes" in the Nether, just lots of lava.

The Nether is like the Underworld in Minecraft. Because of this, it has lava, and fire.
The volcanic biome that is being suggested is a biome, made of stone, with lava dripping from the sides, with acid, and valuable minerals on the surface.
I would've suggested an obsidian bucket but it seems like Mojang and 4J are against obsidian being used to make tools and other items. As far as I can remember obsidian is used only for nether portals and enchantment tables. The are no steps, slabs, tools, or armor which lots of people want. Personally I'd like to see all of those plus obsidian bricks. Have them be similar to stone bricks except have white mortar lines.
volcanic biome should only spawn on normal-hard mode cuz beginners mite die quickly.
though i'd be down with that, that is easier said then done. 4J would have to remake, reprogram, and redo a bunch of stuff to make it that way. i just think noobs should stay off the volcano islands/lands just like when i was a noob about 3 years ago when i bought minecraft i knew to stay out of un-lit area's and creepers. my point being that all they have to do is know their limits
