I think a new potion should be added called the "Potion of X-ray vision." It would be crafted with an Ender eye and a Spider eye. It allows you to see through walls and through the ground. The purpose is when mining, you can see more ores and can see through structures. It does not allow you to see through Mobs or Animals, only structures.
Cons:
*Might cause lots of lag
*Might make the game less challenging in a couple of minor ways
Please share ANY feedback you have on why it's good and why it's bad. I like getting feedback so I can add on to my suggestion and make it better.
EDIT: The potions runs out in 10 seconds, but you can change that by drinking a bucket of milk. You can only see 5 blocks deep at the most, but the majority of the time you see 3 blocks deep. It has a side affect that after the potion runs out, you will have "Blurred Vision". You CANNOT see through chests or see the items in chests. It can't be strengthened or turned into a splash potion, it must be consumed by drinking.
I'll quote this directly from my guidelines post to show why seeing ores with an X-ray potion is a bad idea.
Poster: My idea is to add an X-ray potion into the game. It could be called the "Potion of Enhanced Vision" and could be made with an Eye of Ender and an awkward potion. This potion would last 30 seconds and make only ores visible.
Finding Diamonds is a happy and uplifting moment to most players, and with a good reason, too. Who would not want a tool that lasts 1,562 uses or armour that grants 80% damage reduction? This idea brings us closer to the treasures, but in the wrong way. Diamonds' rarity isn't a mistake, and having instant access to them would defeat the value and integrity by a vast amount. We should not have such useful items handed to us so easily.
One potion combined with exiting without saving would give someone Diamond Amrour and tools before you would've read down to this point in the post, and would've demolished the intended challenge of the game. It is best to leave the players have the challenge of and putting the effort into finding rare and powerful items instead of handing them out on a silver platter. After all, aren't challenges and goals the purpose of any game?

If you can see through things... wouldn´t you also see through ores instead of seeing the ores???

If it works like the x-ray glitch, then yes... you would only see through to the next open area(s) past the opaque blocks that are immediately in your visual path...unless the effect was specifically programmed to highlight or display buried ore blocks in some way.

BloodyPhoenix raises a good point.... But unless the potion is mass produced in some way, it probably wouldn't be overpowered, and could complement the game for the hunt for those said treasures... After-all, it isn't like it's marking the coordinates on your map, so you might end up having to take multiple doses to get to just one target ore vein.
Anybody can just use the x-ray glitch to accomplish this to a degree. I can personally do without it since I already have my preferred method of diamond hunting, but I won't complain if it is added.
I just gotta say, though... it should only last about 5 seconds. Maybe even make it a two-step process, requiring an Eye of Ender and something else, say a golden carrot. After all, you can make 3 potions at once.

That is still overpowered.
We already can cheat with enchantments by saving and then exiting until the desired result is obtained, and a similar thing would be achievable with this.
Save, drink one, find a vein, mark the location, exit, mine them, repeat.
It would take only one to have as many diamonds as you need, which is not necessary at all. I have 57 blocks of diamonds in my world that I obtained with X-ray potions.
How bout this. By using the potion, a side-effect happens after drinking it. Maybe lose of health or draining your hunger bar. Make it to where it can only be used once and the brewing stand can only make one of them at a time. It can't be strengthened or turned into a splash potion, must be consumed by drinking. It must be made with costly items too, like eyes of ender and ghast tear, or something like that. Lasts like 5-10 seconds and shows the world like the x-ray glitch (the one that uses tnt for those that don't know). I think this could be fair and doable.

X-ray really seems like a noob idea.. i mean yes it would be kinda fun but in the long run it would ruin the game, you would run out of diamonds very quickly and it doesn't take that long to find diamonds anyway and the amount of diamonds you really need isn't much but then again the whole main goal to most people is getting rich but what happens when you have mined every diamond from your world using the potion of X-ray? In all honesty I have thought about something pretty much the same, however i thought of an alternative to the potion of X-ray say maybe with it you can only see through 1 or 2 or 3 blocks and not unlimited blocks except the ores. the whole thing would be fun but in reality diamonds aren't that extremely hard to find or obtain using villagers (yes they don't give diamonds but they give armor and swords and pics)
If a person has to get in the mode of existing and saving every time they use it in order to conserve potions and 'cheat the system', that seems way more trouble than it is worth, but just to point out that that would also wipe out any detrimental effects you add trying to balance it. So adding negative impacts would only encourage this behavior, not discourage it.
If it operates like the x-ray glitch, then it won't really show you any buried veins nor ores per se... It will show you open caverns and open areas, and let you see through walls. As long as it isn't highlighting ores just the next open area, this doesn't seem too bad, except for...
One of the major drawbacks of this, IMO, is not that it would help in mining, but rather it would help players find the Stronghold and the End Portal and it would help griefers in finding other player's hidden bases and stashes.
What is the point of doing this. It is wasted time for the developers because if you want more diamonds I'm sure there is a way to duplicate and there is even creative to just spawn them in. So to me this is completely pointless. Even if you do add a debuff it would just be pointless to even use when l could just go into creative and spawn them in or go on youtube and figure out how to duplicate. So with one word I will sum all this up: No

Good idea. I was just about to post that you should only see a few blocks through things, so that you wouldn't see just plain nothing at some points.

I agree. It should be about 10-15 seconds or less, and we would have to come up with a side affect. Maybe after the potions runs out you might have a "Blurred Vision" side affect or something.

I changed it so that now the potion allows you to:
*See ONLY 3 blocks deep
*Only lasts for 10 seconds
This will decrease the amount of cheating around with the potion. And as GregNelson said, that seems way more trouble than it is worth.

Just a quick note that you CANNOT see through chests or see the items in chests.

A bucket of milk should do it

Right... good call... I hadn't thought of that.

Useful, yes; too useful, yes.

I thought about this some more and I agree it would be a major game breaker.
I withdraw any support.
