It would be cool if there was a way to corrupt potions of fire resistance with fermented spider eyes. When players or mobs are affected, they will be on fire until it wares off, they are in water or they drink milk. If turned into a splash potion, they will act as Molotov cocktails that don't set the environment on fire.

Okay... when I was first reading I was thinking "wth is this guy thinking why would you drink something to intentionally light yourself on fire?" but then I saw the end where you add gunpowder so it's throw-able and thought it was brilliant idea..
So I support this alot.
However.. you can just have fire enchanted bow to do the same.. But you can't exactly have the same ability of "mass producing" them like you can these potions.
The thing is, in order to shoot flaming arrows you would need to get that specific enchantment, possibly infinity and also hit everything you want to set on fire. If these potions existed you could create a slime farm, farm blazes in the nether, create a spider farm by securing a dungeon, create a nether wart farm, a sugar cane farm and grow giant brown mushrooms to produce an insane amount of potions that have an area of effect!

Yeah exactly. This has potential to be OP.... But the potential of it just being around and being this useful I think is better than that. I see this as being very beneficial.
hrm... I'd rather they did light the ground they hit on fire (that can spread), sort of like using a long range lighter...erm.... flint and steel.
They would need to change the behavior of splash potions for that to work. Since they won't light anything else on fire, you can set traps in your house with dispensers. Although when you think about it, no other splash potions have a threat of affecting the environment. Maybe these could be a special case. The host or moderators could just turn fire spreading on or off if they want.
I see what you're going for here, but I don't see much of a point.
What you're suggesting is basically Poison--same effect, same rate of damage, but it can be removed early somehow(?).
That being said, there are enchantments and items made for lighting enemies on fire already and "molotovs" already exist as Poison.

Why do we have diamond swords when we can have iron swords with sharpness and unbreaking

I put my shirt on one leg at a time, just like everybody else.

But what if they set the environment on fire and had a lingering effect? Wouldn't that be unique enough? Going into water wouldn't get rid of the status effect and if they leave the water, they would catch on fire again! They would either need to have milk on them or stay in the water until it wares off, or die! They would also kill things because unlike poison, fire doesn't leave you with half a heart! They would also be very useful for killing monsters, except in the Nether of course.
You could also secure a dungeon by throwing one in it. It would set the monsters on fire and the light from the fire on the ground may prevent anything else from spawning, giving you time to place torches.
Wow, how ironic is that! I don't play the PC version and therefore have no experience with command blocks. It's funny that we had a similar idea though.
