It may not be so bad if they allowed us to change the color schemes on the skins we DO have... like a blue Master Chief or a red enderman. It wouldn't give us the full customization we're looking for, but it would still increase the possibilities greatly.
I think it would be nice. But I doubt it'll happen.
Let's say that they do this. Suddenly we can make our own skins.
Well then someone else goes and creates a skin for a copyrighted character such as Yoshi. Or Rainbow Dash.
Even though Mojang didn't create the skin, by programming and releasing the skin creator they facilitated the skins creation and are therefor liable.
that's a pretty loose understanding of copy rights. by this reasoning crayola could be sued for children drawing mickey mouse. its only an infraction if a righted image is used to profit. like if I made mcx micky mouse land and then charged for membership to the server or used mickey to advertise my server. any image made by players would only be a likeness and used only as the player, no different then the thousands of servers featuring pixal art.
Aren't they already working on texture pack support? I'd love to have it as well.
Anyways, having the ability to have our own custom skins like the PC version would be amazing.
Basically, I want to hurry up and catch up to the PC. This, server IP-like joining support, map sharing, etc would make this game feel more customizable.

Disney is not going to go after Crayola because a child drew Micky Mouse. That comparison makes no sense whatsoever. Neither you nor I are experts in the field of Copyrights. The bottom line is this: While it would be cool to be able to make our own skins and what not, legally it's too much of a liability for Mojang, 4J Studios, and Microsoft. Mario, Link, Samus Aran, Yoshi, Picachu and all other Nintendo created characters are owned by Nintendo, period.
Let's say for the sake of argument that a Skin editor is made for MCXB360 edition, this is what is likely to happen: Someone makes a Mario skin and starts using it in MCXB360E multiplayer games, Nintendo gets wind of it, and goes after 4J Studios for making the Skin Editor, Mojang for allowing the Skin Editor to be made, and Microsoft for allowing the Skin Editor to pass in Cert Testing.
4J Studios has said this repeatedly, there will not be a Skin Editor for MCXB360E ever, I'm sorry. I'd like a Skin editor as much as the next guy, but I totally understand the positions Mojang and 4J Studios have taken on this issue.

You both have no idea what you're talking about. If you haven't played it I suggest you look up the PC game Spore. There are thousands of player made creations on that game that are from other games, movies, or anime. To my knowledge EA hasn't been sued once over it. There have been plenty of movie/game inspired maps On Warcraft 3 and Starcraft as well. Don't see anyone getting sued over that either. Unless money is being made off of the copyrighted material there isn't an issue.
I'm not one that is going to go out of my way making new skins. I don't see any legal issues coming out of this suggestion as long as sharing of skins is restricted, and technically, 4J would not be liable for anything created by end users that violated any copyright laws unless they also directly profited from that copyright violation. (That would be like suing Microsoft or Dell because someone illegally copied and sold a version of "War and Peace" as their own work, solely because it was done on a Dell PC using MS Word).
But it does seem to be a bit of a hassle to build an indirectly related interface just for the purpose of end users being able to make their own skins. Basically, you'd be asking them to stop working on MC in order to work on a completely separate program that is indirectly related to MC. (a MC skin editor)
