The game does this already when you are in the process of breaking the block to determine how many hits it will end up taking before it breaks, and also to apply the appropriate cracked block texture to the block to show how close the block is to breaking. It would just be holding on to that for a longer time and have to do regular updates.

I always found it weird why we couldn't have multiple people hit the same block to break it quicker. So hopefully what you briefly said will be implemented.
