This might be a little useless, but I thought about this the other night.
Pets... your dog/s and cat/s:
If you do not interact with them within two days and nights, (or another set time period), they "Lay Down" on a nearby bed, if there is one, on their own bed, if you have made one for them, (pet bed= carpet and i don't know... a wooden slab... whatever. It would a half the size of a normal bed and half the height. Another small suggestion!) or they lay down right where you left them and cannot bark/meow. They are quiet!
So if they lay down on a bed, you cannot sleep in that bed until you have them follow you to another location.
If they lay down on their bed, (if one is implemented into the game as a "Pets Bed"), they now will sleep which in turn you can sleep because they are quiet.
If they are not on their bed or laying down and they are just sitting nearby, you cannot sleep because they bark/meow and keep you from sleeping.
Also:
Say your dog is laying down near your location, say 20 blocks or so. If a hostile mob is nearby, the dog will not bark alerting you of danger. A cat would do they same thing except only for creepers. So if you had a dog and a cat sitting nearby, they will bark/meow if there is a hostile mob nearby... alerting you of danger. If they are laying down because you have not interacted with them within a set time period, they are quiet which mobs walk right by them nearing your location, just like usual.
Benefit from dog/cat on their own bed: ? (to be determined)
Benefit from dog/cat laying down: 1. nice and quiet 2. ? (to be determined)

Another suggestion: Pup... small dog and/or Kitten... small cat: During a thunderstorm, they hide under a nearby bed or in a one block sized hole. You have to lure them out with a bone for a pup and an uncooked fish for a kitten. That is the only way they can get out.
updated: PET BED: in suggestions
Ok, so i have three suggestions here and I know to post them individually... which will come. The one to talk about in this thread is: Quiet Mode for pets...having your pet/s Lay Down if ignored.
I wouldn't mind the barking/mewing if it had a purpose. To warn of mob, whine if they are hurt that kind of thing....but the constant noise drives me nuts!

This to me seems like an overly complicated version of what I've been trying to get added since I started playing the game: An option to turn the volume of mobs off. If we could turn the volumes of mobs off I would be in heaven. Then I could finally play my game again in peace without the noises of all the animals, zombies, and skeletons etc.
The noises don't really bother me much in the Nether, except for Ghasts. So it would be in the form of a check list of what mobs you want noises from, or just a switch for all of them.
Anyway.. I guess to add to the actual suggestion (Since I missed the point it seems?)
I'd like it better if it was just in its own bed of some sort. I'd hate to have it try sleeping in my bed when I need to sleep (Should the occasion occur). Plus I'd just rather them have their own beds. Their beds would probably take up half the space ours do.

If they are injured, they slowly heal over time while lying down in their bed without having to be fed?
