So we have boats for water, pigs and rails for land(and eventually horses), so how about something for air? people love making sky builds so lets take a very popular pc mod and put a vanilla twist on it.
hot air balloons.
balloon is made of 5 wool and 2 string in the shape of pants
basket is made of 5 wood blocks(3 bottom, 2 middle sides) with a fence gate in the middle
whole balloon is made by placing balloon in the middle slot, basket in middle bottom with sand block on each side(ballast for effect)
balloon can lift player to a max of y:175 and has durability/flight time of max 20 minutes(1 day/night cycle) or maybe 3 landings(on 3rd landing it breaks into a few wool and some sticks)
limitations: slightly less lift as durability goes down, if you land in water or hit a tree it could break apart(or at least take a hit to the durability. if it gets shot it could "pop" or take a hit to durability.
it could be 5 blocks tall and 3 blocks wide(cube dimensions) and require at least a 3x3 space to land.
i think its pretty reasonable. ive provided the base idea. you guys tell me the rest. open minds and honesty
While I'm not opposed to it I know lots of people would have a Vanilla cult fit over this. Plus it's not weird enough for minecraft they might as well add a giant bird into the game where you can hop on and fly it around. Just to make it even weirder it could be a penguin or dodo which in real life are flightless birds and one is extinct.

Okay jokes aside....
I actually don't mind this idea. It seems modest, you're not saying it can travel very fast, you're not saying It's OP, this actually seems like a pretty decent idea.
At first I was like "mmm......."
This could actually work..
You could have it move, say the speed of a boat...
Use A to go up, do nothing to let it go down (Like with swimming).
And have it like you said, depending if it gets bumped... shatters, or has its own life bar that lasts a few hits before breaking.
