i happen to love sailing yet the small boat the game allows you to build is not enough any more. i would really like to be able to build a ship, a proper ship. something with storage and a cabin and most of all sails that respond to the wind(sorry i want wind as a weather element as well). many are the maps i have generated that have so many islands.
my current fav started with only two normal islands on the whole map and only two trees could i find. all other islands were mushroom islands. the only non hostil mob i could find was a mooshroom(i named him gary)
i love this map but would love it more if i could have a proper sail boat to move about the world in, especially if i could have my friends in the boat with me. to be clear i dont want air ships or cannon fights or tanks, planes, or cars. but a long ship should be within the sphere of the game. and oplease dont point out the mods for computer, i only play on 360 and would perfer this to be a "built in" feature. aside from this i quite love the game and thank both 4j and mojang for it.
to be clear i mean only a single mast ship (like a viking long boat) not 30 blocks or something like that, something perhaps at most 8 or seven blocks long and fairly narrow, quarters on board can be fairly cramped as well. i am far more interested in the sailing aspect the trying to have a mobile house
I'm thinking of a double or triple boat, just two or three boats attached. There would be a driver, and it could hold other people, or have a on-board chest.
Some creative Japanese Java Programmers created a Mod for the PC which is being called the 'Aircraft Mod', This mod basically goes out and isolates a group of blocks and incorporates them into a movable 'ship' if you will.
The Mod was specifically designed with flying in mind, but a similar mod could be used with rules in place to allow only water travel either on or below the surface.

I think this would be okay.
I mean, you have Minecarts with chests (as useless as they are to me...) so I don't see why not a big boat that has a chest built in.
Other things I'd love to see for boats are like.. being able to transport more than one person at a time
But most importantly.. NOT SHATTER EVERY TIME YOU EVEN REMOTELY BUMP INTO SOMETHING. Whether that is in the form of an Iron Boat.. I dunno.. But those are all fairly important points I think.

I'd love this.
On a side note mojang/4jay please make it so our boats don't shatter into pieces for no apparent reason on the water, or when we barely tap any kind of coastline.

Or for even no reason at all... My friend couldn't travel in one of my worlds at one point. The boats kept shattering for.. no apparent reason. They don't have a distance before breakage though do they??

Not that I've seen, but they will shatter on a moments notice if you touch anything that is considered off limits to the boat while traveling at a modest speed.

I believe I read somewhere sometime ago that the boats may be taking some fall damage as the game interprets the wave action of the water. Not sure if anything ever came of it though.
I believe that, at one time, Mojang indicated that they would try to make larger, customizable boats a part of the game. It hasn't happened yet though.

I've never really taken a boat anywhere where there is a current (a water flow), Ive been mostly on large lakes or the Ocean Areas where there really isn't any current activity to 'interpret' any sort of 'Wave Action'. So I can't comment on if the boat is any less reliable in rivers as opposed to the open sea... but it is pretty unreliable on open 'calm' waters as it is.

I wish I could find where it was I read about it (been running searches off and on since seeing this topic)... so far no luck. I have had boats shatter though on the open sea with no obstacle (squid or other) and only deep water around the boat... so, some sort of hidden cumulative damage factor (like fall damage) made sense to me at the time I read about it.
ETA: I think I may have misread since I have found posts describing lethal fall damage taken by the player when a boat collides with an obstacle even in shallow water. I may have confused this with the boat just spontaneously breaking apart. I can only think of 2 things to possibly explain my boats just shattering in deep water: 1) an unseen squid spawning right underneath the boat and 2) an air pocket in the ocean where there may be an unseen downward current. (The Wiki does note that floating air pockets do spawn within the ocean environment.) At any rate, I agree with everyone here... it would be really nice if the boats were less fragile.

Hi

Check out the Aircraft mod for some ideas:

Or the map edge.... (ie. open sea)

I find that weird.... I hate how they shatter.
Me too, makes me prefer to just swim rather than bother with boats at all.

I do support the idea.

... or 3) XB360 Map Edge (X or Z = +/- 863)
Those can break boats too? You kidding me? Lol
