To the Art team at 4J...
Thanks for you hard work. I'm know it's not as easy as some people might think. There is likely a lot of tweaking and going back and forth on textures, finding what works and what doesn't. Any creative work for a client, 4j and by extension the community is hard work. An artist's work is put under a microscope, loved or hated by a critical community. And 98% percent of that community have no clue.
That said, I'd like to suggest a couple things for future textures.
The existing texture packs have one clear winner.. The Natural texture pack. This one has a few good strong points. The color palette is warmer, and the textures blend well. The oak wood in this pack is particularly warm and nice to use. The understated dark trim on chests, and other items is nice too. The downside is stone. It's not bad, but personally I prefer a smooth stone texture. This is probably because of vanilla minecraft.
The overall theme is slightly understated, but present and this provides a series of well balanced choices that can lend itself to almost any build. Building a castle? You can.. You want a more modern or even steampunk build. It's possible. I think the strongest point of this texture pack is that it's flexible. That is something that I think should be emulated in future packs.
The Fantasy pack is good also.. It's bolder colors are refreshing. It follows the theme nicely. There are some nice block textures here, cobblestone, and all of the varieties of brick really stand out. The swords and armor feel great too. Overall it feels like this pack leans towards primary colors, thicker outlines and textures. The one downside is the gold trim, it feels slightly over used. It works great on a number of things, but it's such a constant that it could reduce the color choices on some builds. It's a good texture pack. Just not as flexible as the previous pack, but in the end it follows a theme nicely. Personally I feel the gold trim should have been replaced in some places with a more iron/steel color trim.
I would love to see in the future texture packs a trend towards flexible textures. Not in every single pack, but one or two. Packs with a strong theme are nice, although I think an understated theme is a stronger choice. Similar to the Natural pack, these provide wider build choices and target a wider audience.
A couple suggestions...
Perhaps a seasonal texture pack. An Autumn texture pack. A lot of oranges, reds and blues. Colored leaves, and a lot of nature like textures. Woodgrain chests, and chiseled stone furnaces. An overall anagolous color scheme of redish orange and perhaps a couple complementary blues in the stone textures. Perhaps even a blue brick texture(the clay ones).
A Modern/industrial type pack. Crisp textures and summer time colors. Clean lines, clear glass. Bright steel looking textures for furnaces, chests and similar items. Leaves and grass could appear fine cut and neat. Fine grain wood planks and soft looking wool. The summer colors could be contrasted by deeper cool grays.
I've purposefully steered clear of the upcoming candy texture pack. I'm not going to judge until I see it. Although this post is sort of because of that pack. I'm slightly worried that it's going to be a pack that belongs in a stampy vid, and that's something the overall community is not like. (Sorry, not a stampy fan.)
As for PC packs. I'm not clear on the legal issues, but there are a few of them that really would be nice on Xbox. It would really help to knit the console and PC experiences together. Helping to provide a more seamless experience across all versions is a good thing in my opinion. I've heard that one of the issues is some packs have a lot of contributors. Perhaps with some of these creators, asking them to create an console specific version could be a solution. This could limit the amount of contributions down to a single 'group' and limit any complex legal issues. But again, I'm not behind the scenes and don't know if this is feasible or not.
Anyways, Thanks again for something great to look at and play.
From a legal standpoint, they would have issues if they just copied the texture pack file directly. If they made it themselves from scratch OR there was at-least a 10% difference modified from the original work, this circumvents current copyright laws (to my understanding), even if it looked very similar to another's work.
Making the texture packs in house seems to be the simplest solution.
Either way.. 4J seems to be on point. There are new pics of another upcoming texture pack. The City texture pack. Exactly what I was hoping for in future packs. Seems to be a lot like what my original post was asking for... Only they clearly thought of it first. Looks pretty cool.

Would you be able to source the images for the new upcoming City Texture Pack?
Just did a quick Google search and came up with nothing.
The black bricks on the ship seem to be nether brick because of the black fences. I think it's going to be a cool pack. I'm excited about it. I'd love to see a closer pic of one of those buildings. I'm not a city builder, but I do enjoy building in a modern style. From the looks of it so far this should do the trick.
