whips, you can use them to grab dropped items, swing across a gap, and obviously inflict some damage to players and mobs as well as bring them closer.
basically it's the indiana jones'd fishing rod. only you cant fish with it.
starting ideas are:
similar look to fishing rod
lets you swing from an over head block and can double your jump distance which would make it 10 blocks give or take
lets you grab dropped items from maybe 3 to 5 blocks away
and inflicts damage to mobs and players at the same rate as fishing poles
there's the base idea, let's go from there. what do you guys think?
Picking up items with an item Is kind of redundant.
Overall you're suggesting a fishing rod super sayian 4.
This Is just my opinion.
And I'm not gonna add on things that I'd think the suggestion needs because
the idea isn't very appealing to begin with (to me)

I can see some uses for this, especially when items drop into difficult to reach places, or there are crevasses or pits that you just want ot swing across instead of build a bridge....
Although, I wouldn't want to use it to bring a MOB closer to me, maybe have that be the secondary (block) function to reach out, ensnare, and pull a MOB or player in closer to you, or your could just attack an opponent and try to keep them at range (especially if enchanted with Knockback)... probably should only do basic punch damage just so it isn't OP over a sword.
What would the effective range be? 3-4 blocks? Much more than that might be a bit OP for this device.

I think three blocks is good. But I'd say it should be at least stronger than a punch... Because while I agree it shouldn't be overpowered... It shouldn't be on par with the weakest type of melee attacks.

knockback sounds better. and normal jump distance with a running start is 3 to 5 blocks i believe. so lets say you had a crevasse with 6 air blocks between you and the other side. if there was an over head block 2 air blocks away, it would increase your jump distance by that many blocks. i would say whatever the mining distance is in survival, that should be the distance.

that wasnt very organized, but on the damage part, i would say maybe the power of a hoe or shovel.
The only time I bring mobs close to me is when I'm on a high mountain and I fish then up and do them with the fishing rod. Kinda fun when you're bored.

bringing MOBs closer was actually a secondary feature. its pretty much been voted out of the idea
they'd have to add rod enchantment first. plus the enchantment would shorten the rod distance.
Yes, they would have to add fishing rods to the list of other tools that can be enchanted. I just find that preferable than adding a whole new item that would have to be designed, skinned and animated. Fishing rods can already tag mobs (I have used them to pull stranded mobs off cliffs), so it's not really that much of a stretch to enable the rod to reel you over to a new location (ie grappling). I believe some other people have also had other suggestions for fishing rod enchantments (I remember one that would increase the number of fish caught much like fortune on a pickaxe increase ore drops), so adding fishing rods to the enchantment list could serve more than a single purpose.
I'm not really in favor of introducing the "whipping" of other players into the game.

we've weeded out the MOB grappling feature(item grapple still included)
BUT i understand where youre coming from.
i think making an item would be just the same if not less complicated as creating a grapple enchantment.
Greg, you still reading this thread? if so whats your take on it?

Whether the grapple is due to an enchantment or the function of a device, this part would have to be coded in either way.
So technically, enchanting the fishing rod is easier to implement overall, but only because it isn't adding a new Item ID to the game that would require an animation and a texture of its own (as well as updating the other TP's that have already been released to accommodate).
But at the same time, it isn't rocket science to add a new block or item into the game either.

i'm gonna look for a grapple mod in PC so i can get an idea of what it would be like because i think it'd be really interesting to see.
i thought of a crafting recipe too.
1 leather, 1 stick, 3 string
from bottom left to top left then down diagonally to bottom right it would be

I'd just do 2 leather and nix the 1 stick... you really don't need wood/sticks to make a good (coiled) bull whip, otherwise same recipe as the fishing rod, replacing the sticks with leather. Unless you are talking about a horse's lunge whip or a riding crop... those really aren't that effective for combat/ensnaring, though.

to be honest ive never MADE a rod in the game. but no stick sounds good to me. i was just thinking of stereotyped whips as being a stick with a leather handle.

Usually, it is just a thicker weave of leather, which is much stiffer than the rest of the whip, but the handle is still flexible (not really very rigid like a wooden handle would be).

ive seen bull whips before. i'd hate to be hit by one.

it's a niche market lol
