I tried looking this up.. But I couldn't find any.
So...
What i'm suggesting is a "coal block".
This would look look similar to a Redstone block, only black and would require the same coal to make a Coal Block as it would be for Redstone to make a Redstone block.
For me, I mine a LOT of Coal. Especially that I use an Enchanted Pickaxe with Fortune III on it. SO.. the end result is 2-3 chest completely filled with just coal.
So... this would be a good way to condense your findings to save space, and material to make a room bigger to accommodate the extra Coal.

I support this for sure! For creative builders it adds another block to play with... but for survival, how would you propose it could be also used? Assuming its made of ten coal pieces, can it be smelted in a furnace ten times longer than a coal piece? Like the idea though of adding a block for condensing.
