This would be a useful tool in regions with little to no trees or there are no trees that you want left (30 days) loads of trees spawn only in blocks not built on or on blocks that have been taken away
But a tree occassionally randomly dropping a sapling... that occassionally plants and takes root near the originating tree wouldn't be a bad idea....
But... I think that already sometimes happens in the game ... at least I believe that I have directly witnessed that very phenomena as I've run across planted saplings near trees that weren't there before and that I didn't plant (in single player mode).
So right after I clear a forest out, 200 trees create a lag storm and undo everything I did.
No, thanks. They're called Saplings for a reason.
Trees that randomly spawn in areas that you have intentionally cleared out would not be a good idea either, IMO. Otherwise, how do you keep the trees out of areas that you have intentionally cleared for building purposes/farmland, etc.
I've cleared out quite amount of land and to see it filled with trees would just break my little tiny heart.
I Thought about this suggestion too.
I had the idea of a large sapling. It would take up 4 placed blocks
and be 2 blocks high. This sapling would grow trees within a blank blank radius and have a limit of blank
blank...I had a chart and everything but I just thought it would be stupid so I deleted the gimp file. Plus, the fact
of a block taking up more than 1 by 1 space would drive people insane.
It takes no time at all to run around in an open area and throw down a bunch of saplings if a new random looking forest is what you want. It takes a lot more time to clear a forest you don't want... and I would abhor having to continually cut down trees that "replant" themselves where I have specific building and/or landscaping plans. No support.
This would be a good tool in creative instead of planting saplings then using bone
Meal to grow the you could just have a tool to place trees instantly It would a lot
Randomly spawning new trees is not what I had in mind.
My idea is a random, small chance that each dropped and uncollected sapling would take root and grow. Greg mentioned that, but I am positive it doesn't currently occur. Maybe about the same spawn rate as an apple, small chance. Like nature. Then if you do clear an area for a project, all you have to do is clean up the saplings, no issues.
Despite that it is me, no support. Saplings are already too easy to get, and it seems like it would get out of control, like trees respawning where they shouldn't.

I had thought that trees already behaved that way and could have sworn that I had witnessed it at least on one occasion... but I haven't seen it since. Although this isn't a bad idea overall, and wouldn't impact game play all that much, IMO. After all, saplings would only drop from existing trees... so they really would just randomly appear in already cleared areas. (although planted saplings might) I would make it so that only specific distance from all existing trees be allowed for a 'dropped' sapling to even have a chance to root, and a small chance at that so that it doesn't happen that often. The chance that a tree even drops a sapling could be small as well, and of course... this would only apply to loaded chunks in the game.
Te downside is that they could randomly spawn in player tree groves, or around planted trees in areas like yards and parkland...so it might add some pruning maintenance to the game in some circumstances...which might not be a downside if you thought of it as part of the game to have to stay on top of on rare occasion.

When you put it like that... It actually makes me kind of like the idea.
If it were like this.. Honestly I wouldn't mind at all. My hopes if it were though... Is that it wouldn't spawn into this gigantic tree that's so big you may as well use a flint and steel on it.
