I don't want you to read so much for such a small idea so I will get straight to the point. I was recently playing Xbox 360's edition of minecraft and came up with the idea that Lanterns should be added to this, already amazing, game. Instead of always placing down torches and picking them back up again, you can have steves little block hand hold a beautifully crafted iron lantern that will display at least the path that you are traveling on to make sure there is no deadly drops or other fatal things. Now i'm not saying be duel wielding a sword and the lantern in the other hand. It'll just be like every other object, perfectly in one hand. This also will never replace torches because it will only be active when you hold it. When i think of holding a lantern in minecraft i think of nothing but good things. It will just make things much more intense that I believe everyone will enjoy.
Just imagine, your walking though an abandoned mine shaft that you have been lost in for a few days now. You've used the rest of your wood that you could carry in your pockets, so therefore you cant make anymore torches. Your cold, wet, you can't see and running low on melon slices, but you have hope. So you turn on your crafting genius and put some coal in the furnace to smelt some iron. Things are looking up now, you take your ingots and go to the crafting table to see what you can make. But what is this? It looks like there is a new little icon in the crafting menu, must of been the latest update, so you see what it is. Oh joy! Its a source of light! You now craft the lantern and put in two coal that burns for about five minutes. It really looks like you are going to get out of this place. While traveling through the mine holding your brand new lantern, you notice some valuable materials that you wouldn't of seen without this amazing new item that's cheap and easy to make when you are going through some tough times (we've all been there). After mining the millions of dollars of materials you walk a little further and see a giant waterfall leading to the surface. Then forgetting everything you know about the world and physics you swim up it to safety.
Wow.... laying it on a bit thick with the up-selling, are we? A new light source that requires iron to craft, and runs out in 5 minutes for each piece of coal you use....
Or.... carry some torches.... If you ran out of torches and wood, you probably can't make that crafting table on the fly... you are burning coal to make the lantern (whose only redeeming value is that is sheds light around only if you have it actively in your hand, not just in your hot bar), cannot be placed anywhere useful and needs to be refueled every 5 minutes... unlike torches which burn forever...
And why couldn't the Suggestion title be relevantly descriptive and say something like... "Lantern"
...and here I thought I was going to read something about Star Wars Ep. 4
I don't like this idea too much. What if I am holding the lantern, and I see a Creeper? I would have to switch to my sword, and once I do that, the light will be gone, meaning the Creeper would blow up in my face. And I would probably NEVER use iron to make a Lantern, except if i'm REALLY desperate.

If it took more than one shot you weren't using a Jacobs.
If im holding a lantern and i see a creeper i will press RB once and that'll switch right to my sword for me OR hit him with the lantern to get him back then switch to your sword. Its that easy. To the earlier comment thats why i always carry a crafting table on me so if i run out of woodI won't have to worry because i already have a crafting table, then i craft a lantern for sweet, sweet light. and im sorry for the star wars reference, i just really like star wars lol

Either way.. I'd rather just stick to torches... from the sounds of it.

What if people don't always carry crafting tables? (This is very rare and stupid to do though)
We already have torches, glow stone, and Jack-o-Lanterns to give light, and lava gives light as well and is found in caves. So I don't really think another light source would be necessary.

I know that you can push RB once to switch to your sword, but then you won't see the creeper. And hitting any mob with a light source tool is not exactly the most efficient way to kill a mob.
But besides that point, I still don't think it's needed.

I'd Be fine with Lanterns as a Decorative Lighting item but that's about it. Having to re-fuel them would be a waste of resources and impractical... Unless your making a Pre-industrial era city.
you guys are missing the point of the lantern im talking about,. its not stationary light like a torch, its something you hold in your hand to walk around with while its on to give you light. you dont put it down, you hold it to turn it on
Totally agree. We need better sources of stationary light than just torches, redstone blocks, and glowstone.
It'd give it a rustic look I think, depending how a design for one of these lanterns would be. I personally pictured them as.. either black or gold or both. One you might see in say Pirates of the Caribbean
I don't care wether its torches or a crafted lantern that gives you light when you hold it, i just want something along those lines. I don't like having to put down torches in a cave to see the ore around or to see an approaching enemy, I want quick and easy light.
They might have torches like that in the PC version, but i wouldn't know, because I'm on the Xbox 360 version of minecraft. If there is torches like that in the PC i would love that to come to the Xbox 360 or One version soon.and plus it would make Minecraft a little more intense, like that game Amnesia

Night vision Potion...
In our next title update you'll have the option to Night vision potions. Please everyone try to understand that this is the CLOSEST thing WE'LL GET to a super saiyan torch...8mins of being able to see In the dark, multiply that by how ever many potions you wanna take with you. PROFIT

I'd rather carry (and place) torches that have an unlimited light supply duration and can discourage aggressive MOB spawning than use limited use Night vision Potions that do nothing to discourage aggressive MOB spawning in the area.
I honestly think that mobile lighting is something that many people think they want... but, they aren't thinking of the drawbacks:
1) A mobile light does not prevent mobs from spawning (as Greg points out above).
2) A mobile light does not leave you a path to find your way back out of a cave.
3) A mobile path doesn't not leave an indication that someone has already been through that particular cave and mined it.
4) A light in your hand means you cannot have your pickaxe or sword in your hand as you walk along (and personally I prefer to carry one of these around depending on where I'm at and what I'm doing).
If the game is going to incorporate a mobile light source, I would rather it be in the form of either a headlamp enchantment for an armor helmet or, as Apathy suggested, a night vision potion.

They do in the PC from what I hear.
SO.. I'd rather have that and just use this lantern as a decorative (non-refuelable) item to use to help spruce up the place.
