For me even though the map is really small, the mini-map could be more zoomed in, like how the rei's mini-map is. Seeing the vicinity around you with some pretty decent detail. Well better than holding the large map out. If anything it could be a world option. I know I would use it.
To expand on this.... If you combine this idea with the Large Full static map I mentioned above... you could use this view to use LB/RB to zoom in and out, and the right joystick to move the section of the map around that you are viewing. You could start the scale at normal map size (call it 1/8 pixel to block scale), to: 1/4, 1/2, 1/1, 2/1 scale. with the mini-maps being roughly 1/32 scale.
That is roughly what I was thinking... at least to the scaling part.
having a full screen map able to pop up would be nice, and the one reason I like both ideas.
Unsure of the trigger activating the mini-map though, even if it would be feasible; however to what I was thinking was the trigger part only doing the full screen map, effectively making the map usable. Then have the other bit just option oriented so that those whom don't want the mini-map could just have it turned off. Of course with both ideas, the map would still have to be at least in inventory; hot bar for using the map to full screen.
Another not is to add something else in the options under graphic settings and that would be map transparency. That way the mini-map can be as transparent as the user would want.

I, quite frankly, don't believe you. I have stored a nether map in my chest in my oldest world for about a year... and each time I've pulled it out to use it, it has remained a nether map.
I was only saying it out of personal experience. I put one in a chest like you, pulled it out and it didn't work like a nether map.
So I made another one and then I accidentally dropped it and then again it didn't work like a normal map.
So.. I think there really does need to be separate maps, or have maps programmed to have the "maps" programmed into the maps you hold in your hand. So that way when you walk into another dimension such as the nether, (maybe wither? I don't think one for the end is necessary but yeah) you just need to walk into that place with a single map, and it will.. adapt to whatever dimension that you are in.

I did this too, until I realised that I kept picking the wrong map out of the chest. I have never had a problem with nether maps resetting to overworld maps, so maybe you had an odd glitch. On the subject of maps, I have only just discovered that you can put a map into a frame and stick it on the wall. I'm sure this is old news to most players, but I was quite chuffed. What would be nice is the ability to make a bigger frame so the map is larger, like you can with pictures.
It would also help a little if the nether maps looked slightly different to overworld maps in chests/inventory. I have lost track of the number of times I have picked the wrong map, put it back and then picked the same one up again...doh

Why not? Currently, I believe you can press LT to change an item orientation within a frame, why not use that same toggle to cycle through different map sizes 'IF' there is room on the wall to do so, and alternate between with frame and without frame. could go up to requiring a 3x3 space and could even have partial steps, such as:
Yes! Wall maps need to come with the Skyrim pack at least. It'd be great as a mini update. Can someone please link this thread to 4j? Make it a weekend update or some crap. Adjust map opaqueness and be able to make a large version of it. or even a table top version of it with something sticking up showing where you are.

??? A mash-up far as I know does not work that way. It changes looks & sounds far as I know. we have yet to see mechanics changed.
Plus I think that the wall map and table top would be better off put with the vanilla game. Right now not able to place maps that way, makes the table top one a no go at the moment. The wall map is literally done via item frames on the pc edition. I wouldn't mind seeing that too eventually, but not in a mash-up only situation. Hmm...

i was meaning if they dont make it vanilla at least put it in something. and wall map i meant wall sized. but speaking of changing mechanics...guns. now if you excuse me, I'm off to start a gun thread.
Sorry if this is a rather obtuse question, but I keep seeing this reference to 'vanilla'... what exactly is meant by this?
Vanilla just flat out means Minecraft that has not bee modified by the outside by mods and the like. Basically the base game that you buy and gets updated by the company that makes it. There fore any sort of mod or tampering outside of the company that is not part of the initial game constitutes as not being vanilla.
Vanilla = Base version (no mods)

Something I wish they'd do with maps is that when you pull out a map, everything at the bottom of the screen disappears completely so you can actually see the whole map.
Because I find it annoying when I'm trying to find a friend or something at the bottom of a map, and I can't see them properly because the health/experience/hotbar/hunger bar keeps getting in the way of me seeing so I have to adjust the map at weird angles just to see where they are.

Agreed....
Or have the map move up just a little more past your HUD as you look further downward... or the HUD moving more out of the way when viewing the map.... it is really annoying trying to see that bottom boundary of the map with the HUD in the way all the time.

the map in PC pops up in the corner of the screen if i'm not mistaken. I know i'm being hypocritical by talking about PC items but it's a legitimate addition to the conversation. The map is far more relevant and useful in console version so it might actually be worth adding something like that to the HUD in some degree. mini-map in the corner(very see through as to not block even more of the screen) when not holding the map(toggle on off in settings) and appears as normal when holding it(full map, see where everyone is, etc). do i think we need it? not exactly. do i think it'd be a cool addition? heck yeah. imagine how it'd look in some texture/mashups. especially the sci-fi ones.

I can see that being an addition.. Although a kind of unneeded addition, because I don't think it's essential.. But it would be interesting to have a small one in the corner, say the top left of the screen (because the bottom already is clumped with all kinds of junk) so long as you have a map on you would be interesting and it disappears and reappears as the big version when you actually pull it out and look at it.
But I don't have a problem with the map as is now. I just don't like how all that junk at the bottom gets in the way when you're trying to look at it. If that was all gone when you looked at the map I think the map would be near perfect.

i just changed the opacity. made it nearly invisible. when i switch through the hotbar it shows up normal but after a few seconds it fades again. it causes lag if theres a lot of people in your map but another good way is to carry a frame around with you.

If they would move the "Display HUD" toggle (currently in the Help & Options Settings menus) to a hot key on the controller would help. Then one could quickly toggle the HUD display off if they wanted to whenever they pulled out their map or wanted to get a better look at something right near the bottom of the screen without moving their head around. Not sure though if there are any buttons left anywhere on the controller map to facilitate it. Perhaps allowing people to replace this with the "change camera" options on the left stick would help.

How could you use a hot key for that?? Every button on the controller is utilized.
Unless they made more use for the D-Pad, which for whatever reason is just anothe way to move around.. Now.. I don't know anyone who would want to play Minecraft NES style.. But I don't despite how much I like NES lol.

What happens when you use the Left Trigger (LT) to 'place/use' the map while you are holding it? Couldn't this be used to toggle off the HUD when the map is actively held in your hands, but only while the Map is actively selected? The HUD would automatically restore as normal once the Map was no longer selected as active in hand or the (LT) was selected again.

I thought I remembered saying that before. But yeah that is something that I wanted as well. Doesn't really take any extreme difference making.
I may have said this exact thing in the PS3 section... I kinda go to both because I have the game for both systems now.
