So instead of dealing with the probabilities... why not just make a condition where zombies ALWAYS spawn as mummies, such as when a Zombie spawns on top of a sandstone block with a non-transparent block above them, then it will spawn as a mummy instead, this would make them extremely common within desert temples, while making them pretty rare outside of desert temples... although you could build your own Mummy spawning grounds.
Skeletons could similarly spawn under this condition as decomposed Zombie Archers, and cave spiders could spawn as giant scarabs, the spider jockey would then be a decomposed mummy archer riding a scarab. Maybe Creepers could be re-textured to be more serpentine/snake-like to help fit the theme.
But this could open up a host of different MOBs that spawn in unique environments/conditions instead of the standard MOB's
now theyre gonna give us an egyptian texture pack lol

Egyptian TP would really only work in an all Desert Biome, since you don't control that on world spawn, it would be seriously out of place in something like a Jungle Biome (Maybe something Aztec styled?).
And notice that I specifically said only spawns on top of Sandstone that has an opaque block above it... that means you would still have to allow for normal spawns outside of that environment.

yeah I like your idea. I think it's all pretty cool. i just have one question. when everything is retextured to be biome related, do they drop texture related items or just the normal drops?

also, just make the creeper a darker color and have the eyes and mouth on front and back and make them a gold color. insta-cobra. if they did make biome related spawn textures we'd be waiting a long time(or so it seems to me). Greg, youre a coder, if you(generally speaking) dedicated time to making biome related spawn(starting with desert only) not counting debugging, how long would it take to make it operational?

You can't really re-texture the drops so easily without defining a new item ID for them other than through a Skin Pack change, and we aren't talking about just a skin pack change, we are actually talking about NEW MOB's that have similar (albeit slightly different) characteristics to their counterparts. Different abilities (ie. poison) different drops (rare drop gold nuggets). Different Textures (easier to just create a New MOB ID to handle this than it is to use the existing MOB's and re-texture them differently in different circumstances.

We'll the PC version Java code seems to be built around Biome specific spawning from what I saw at it from a glance, assuming 4J kept a similar architecture in porting the code over, Biome specific spawning for some MOBs shouldn't be problematic.
Also, farm animals will only spawn on a grass block, they will not spawn on any other block (not wild grass, but the normal dirt block that has the grass top). This is a specific Block ID that the game is looking for, for spawning purposes. Villagers can only spawn if the number of houses within the village radius can support them, part of the determination of a house requires checking if there are opaque blocks around doors blocking the view of the sky.
So the programming mechanisms 'should' already in place inside the game, they just need to be tweaked a bit to make it happen.

a mummy mob? sounds pretty cool actually.
Dear 4J,
Please make this thread come to life in the game.

A MOB (for those of you that don't know) is a term used in the 3D Graphics programming environment to label a Mobile Object within that environment, it was later adopted by the computer gaming community to largely refer to NPC, animal, or monsters and such that seemingly move of their own accord, although, technically, a MOB is any 3D rendered object whose change in possition has to be calculated by the program to simulate movement within the 3D environment.

i know. i wasnt meaning a large group or organized crime syndicate.
i think it would be cool to actually have a spawn egg for mummies, scarabs/scorpions, half mummified skeleton archers, cobra creepers, all kinds of biome specific things like the witch is/was on pc.
maybe for taiga we could have frozen(looking) zombie expeditioners, ice skeletons, and snowman creepers.
minecraft dimension add. sands of time. you build an hourglass or the wall/door from night at the museum 2. it takes you to a giant desert dimension where it's always day. the boss is the pharaoh. it takes the Giant and makes it look all King Tut(i'd say anubis but that would just be too awesome). maybe there's a giant temple or obelisk. drops 1.5x the xp that the enderdragon drops. has a little more health. is fire based. and drops a death mask instead of a dragon egg. let's get 4J on this. who's with me?
Maybe you could have the spawn be similar to wither skeletons... when using a zombie spawn egg in a dessert there's a higher if not 100 percent chance of spawning the mummy.

IMO, Spawn eggs... as long as they are intended for creative only maps and cannot be acquired in survival, should not be random in nature.
I understand that the PC uses the same skeleton spawn egg for the whither skeleton and the skeleton, and even has the spider spawn egg have a chance to spawn with a rider... But if I'm going to be in creative to 'create' a map...ideally for others to play in, then I want more control than that.
Also, @Kaiju, You can't say that adding MOBs is unrealistic for the XB360 in the Rain Forest Biome thread, then make the same request here, and expect to have people treat this idea seriously.

"with all the mobs" meaning the list of 20+ new biome specific mobs. if they added it, that'd be awesome. but realistically they'd probably only pick 1 or 2 to consider adding. did you read the list? not that it's a bad list but with all those mobs in that biome it'd be the laggiest place on Pandora. i liked his gorilla idea though. some of the things he suggested go great with this thread tho. tapir's could be a biome specific pig texture. gorilla's(if not their own mob) could be iron golem textures.

The lag could be controlled with the current MOB spawn caps already in place, sure, there would be greater variety, but each specific MOB becomes that much more rare to encounter, even inside their own biome.
I agree, unfortunately, that you would never really get that 'full of wildlife' feeling without ultimately lagging the system to hell and gone...but the variety 'could' be there.
I actually really like the idea of having different MOBs spawning for different biomes and conditions.
