Sometimes you want it to be Night time when it's Day time.
Why not let us sleep in beds during the day to let us make it night right away as well as make it day time when it's night? Sometimes we want to get things done but have either night time or day time getting in the way.
I think this is a great idea. It would make monster hunting easier, and with much less cave/ravine crawling just for a few drops. There have also been several times (i.e. almost every seed I've made) where I found myself wishing it were night time so that I could sleep to alter my spawn point. It's a bit of a pain to have to wait 10 minutes just to save a spawn point. Support.
Because you wonder how I could talk about money, girls, clothes God and history all in the same sentence You know what all those things have in common Only half the truth, if you tell it
In principle, I think there should be some things in a game that are beyond the player's control... or else it really ceases to be a game to me. No support.

Well, why have the ability to sleep at night and have it instantly turn to day time then?
If it's bad to turn it to day time when it's night but not to night time when it's day... Why not just remove beds and have it be a natural cycle beyond our control altogether then?

Making time pass when there isn't really anything exciting going on in a game isn't (IMO) one of those things that necessarily should be beyond a player's control. In fact, being able to do so could enhance the game for players who prefer to hunt at night and sleep during the day.
If it were me, I might limit the amount of time you can consecutively sleep in a bed... (like not allowed to sleep again for another 10 minutes or so) just in case there is something ultimately added to the game that hinges off of lunar cycles, you might not want someone to fast advance to/through it via consecutive sleeping.... but as of right now, I don't see any reason not to allow this.

My comment is not really a harsh criticism of the idea... just an expression of a personal preference. I'll explain...
I do think the natural progression of the day/night cycle is an integral part of the survival Minecraft game as Notch intended it to play out. The "game" as he designed it incorporates a set of collective elements of fighting mobs, building and design, automation, and collecting and managing resources and "luck of the draw." From the first night, it's a "statement" on the progression of society... from wooden tools to industrial automation while overcoming a number of DIFFERENT sorts of obstacles... including things like the frustrations of weather AND the natural passage of time. IMO, without allowing oneself to "let go" and just experience all of these elements working together, the "gaming" experience is incomplete.
As video gaming has progressed, there has been an increasing desire/tendency for players to want to almost literally write/program their own individual game into every game they play... and that's OK; but I'm from an earlier generation and I prefer to just allow the developer to guide me through the story THEY wanted to tell when they dreamt up THEIR game. As more and more, gaming developers succumb to the "public" pressures of people who want to rewrite every game to suit themselves, they have less and less room to express their own creativity; and the games themselves merely become amateur programming APIs. I personally think that is somewhat tragic.
Now, I do recognize that this particular suggestion is about allowing sleeping through the day... so presumeably this means the game time would be unaffected unless everyone in the world went to bed (just as sleeping the night away is handled currently in multiplayer). As a result, I'm not as adverse to this suggestion as previous ideas that had the host controlling the day/night cycle outright. Having the host control it could create a lot of issues similar to other host privileges in multiplayer games (where people often want to do different things with their time in the game than the others they are playing with) in that a vindictive host could totally mess with another player's efforts by suddenly switching the game from night to day or day to night. If a host privilege for manipulating the day/night cycle is implemented, I would suggest that it deactivate the leaderboards and achievements just the same as the host flying about does now.

Please see my above comment. It's not that it's "good or bad"... it is what it is simply because that's how Notch intended to write the game. If you want to know why he did it that way, you should ask him.

Although I agree with your sentiment on game designs (I, too, am from an earlier generation and can appreciate a good story line as developed by the designer). I think one of the purposes of a Suggestions thread is to brainstorm, suggest, and evaluate ideas. Some good, some not so good, and allow the developer to use that as a resource to draw on ideas that they might not have otherwise considered, as well as get some public feed back as we try to analyze the pros and cons of each idea in order to flesh it out more.
Certainly, if the developer doesn't like an idea, or it goes against where they want to go with a particular game, they shouldn't succumb to public pressure... but then again, there may be something that they never thought of that will enahnce the overall story line/genre, or just make some simple functions more user friendly that doesn't 'hurt' the game, that they might not have otherwise considered, or maybe they had already rejected an idea, and someone makes a good point that they hadn't considered (such as a way to limit it, or alter it's functionality so it could work), so they can take that idea back and reconsider it some more in light of new insight.

I think for the sake of argument.. What if it was a toggle-able option done within the game or before the game starts to have it be to do this? Or perhaps have it be really different.
Say in Hard Mode, sleeping in beds doesn't do anything at all and it just has a natural cycle like I was saying before kinda.
I say for the sake of argument because.. Well why not? And like Greg said we use discussions etc to find out which ideas sift through to a finer one.
I didn't really take it as a criticism I was just curious. Besides.. some friendly criticisms such as why you didn't think so was good. It was just a simple "no" and you said why. You didn't exactly break down each segment of the suggestion and dismiss it as if it was the dumbest idea in history which by the way I appreciate you not doing that. Because having the 5 W's on each segment why you think it would be stupid would be an example of what could make forums like this NOT fun. But I enjoy these forums quite a bit.

I don't think the fine details matter. It's really whether or not the developer/creator of the game decides to part with whatever philosophy behind the current sleeping through the night only setup. If that goes out the window, then there is absolutely no reason not to make it work exactly the same as sleeping through the night does not (i.e. in multiplayer, everyone must go to bed to advance the clock). All I'm saying is that the "you can only sleep in a bed at night" is clearly an intentional addition to the game by the creator... one HE thought out and decided to add because of that is how he wanted the game to play out... and I'm just inclined to respect those sorts of conscious decisions rather than try to change them. If he wants to change it, fine... all he needs to do then from a programming perspective is remove the current restriction that produces the message "you can only sleep in a bed at night." Simple.

Since Beds were added in Beta Version 1.3 at the SAME time as repeaters.... I'd have to say that I don't think they were part of the 'original plan'... especially since the original plan to reset a player's spawn point was supposed to be the 'Crying Obsidian' before that was abandoned in favor of the bed:
I'd have to conclude that the introduction of the 'bed' in itself was already most likely in response to public suggestions to start with... with the added feature to make the game 'easier' for some players by making the night pass uneventfully... why not at least consider adding it as an option to make it 'harder' for those that want the day time to pass into night?

Not quite... just removing that restriction alone would only make the day pass to the next morning, you still have to have the functionality in place to check whether it is day time or night time before your program can decide if it will advance to the next morning or the next evening, and even then, you have to consider what happens if you are sufficiently close to dawn or twilight on either side (ie. am I really going to sleep to allow 30 seconds of game time to pass and just have to sleep again because I didn't wait those 30 seconds before climbing into bed).
Sometimes you want it to be Night time when it's Day time.

Agreed. Sometimes in survival I see the sun setting and I stare at it, waiting for it to go down so I can fall asleep. And it feels like it takes so long.
