I posted something earlier about a blood moon, if you are interested in that go look at it. I realized that I don't really care if it is a blood moon I just want something that makes it a little more exciting and different while playing survival. When I reviewed my Blood Moon idea I thought , what If instead of a moon where mobs spawn and try and attack you, there was a game mode that you could enter called Survival Waves. In that game mode you spawned randomly with an artifact to protect. (The artifact is already place, you cant move it.) You have till nightfall to build some kind of shelter around your artifact to protect it from a wave of the weakest hostile mob. (Idk what mob that is). Every wave a new mob is added, (Wave 1: Spider, Wave2: Skeleton Wave3:Zombie Wave 4 Creeper Wave 5 Enderman). Every 5 Waves it starts over and the weakest mob attacks again, except now it could have a speed buff or strength... or both. And it adds mobs every nightfall once again, but this time it adds nether mobs to the end. at wave 15 it would reset and at build up, and after all the nether mobs add the ender dragon... and eventually the wither. THE RESETING THING IS JUST AN IDEA IT DOESNT HAVE TO WORK. Every wave the artifact will give you a random item. Weapon, Armor, Food, Building Equipment, Potions. This could also have a build system, so you don't get diamond gear in the first wave. If the mobs destroy your artifact you lose. I AM OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS PLEASE DONT JUST DISMISS, HELP ME OUT!!!

I'm not dismissing... I'm commenting on in game things that would have to be addressed...
The MOB AI would have to be altered.
IE. Distance/Range for MOB detection would need to be extended, or would they just spawn around and home in on this artifact?, maybe even MOB detection without line of sight, Endermen don't attack unless looked at, so they would have to spawn hostile, and stay hostile.
Maybe even some sort of cluster algorithm to have them 'tend' to move in groups, until they catch 'the scent' of their prey.
Would Creepers need to blow up to 'dig a path' into your lair if they can't find a path to you directly? Would endermen remove blocks specifically from your walls/defenses if they can't get directly to you?
You may want to consider how much time you are willing to give for a "build phase" between waves.
Is this like, survive the night, build during the day? Is sleeping in a bed to make the night pass disabled?
IMO, slimes are by far the easiest 'hostile' MOB, although zombies aren't too bad if you don't have doors as barriers to your artifact. Each MOB has their weaknesses, so ease is relative to what you are prepared for.

the day and night would have to be altered as well. making day longer than night by a bit, and yes sleeping in beds would be disabled. I do like your thinking about the creepers and enderman, that would be a nice touch I think. I was thnking they spawn around your artifacts. But then you could have someone gathering at night, so idk about that. I also think that if a zombie sits and stares at a block long enough it should be able to break it, like a wooden door. I wasn't counting slimes because they are easy to block out and slow and weak.
Reminds me of Dead Island a bit.
