Just thought maybe I could throw out there a use that sticks could have, besides building ladders, fences, torches, and redstone torches.
Basically, the idea would be that the stick would point to the direction of water, I know have a map, but.. it doesn't point to the waters when mining, etc.
I'm well aware that this could be pointless, but it could also have some value.

i think its kinda pointless you have two adapt try to haer the water.
Interesting thought... although, personally, I'd rather it let me know if I got close to lava, LOL.
I suppose it could work though, just carry a stick in your inventory and as soon as you get within 'x' blocks of a water source block, it starts pointing in the direction of that water source.

Assuming by "inventory," you mean in the hot bar and not in your hand... wouldn't this require animating the entire hot bar to point... and point exactly where since the hot bar is two-dimentional? If you mean "in your hand", then I would rather carry a pickaxe while mining and listen for sounds of water and lava. Lava also has the additional "tell" of emitting significant quantities of light.

Sorry, yes, in the hot bar (not required to be in hand), and the stick icon itself would have to be animated (not the entire hot bar), working like the compass or the clock in the hot bar....
Maybe a special dowsing rod could be added instead, created by putting a stick in the enchanting table and spending some levels to enchant.
... and why do you need a "guarantee" as to direction? It's a game - walk around a little and you'll soon see it.
I don't.
But if I've made a stair case going up 55 levels with torches in it.. I'd rather not have to go all the way down and place torches on the entire thing.... again. That's just on example.

Even IF you hear it... You can't always guarantee what direction it is smarty.
