I was thinking, that it might be nice to recover some of your material investment into an item (tool, weapon, armor, rail) that was put into a furnace.
Basically, recycling your equipment if you no longer needed it.
Iron weapons/tools/armor/iron rails/buckets/cauldrons/compass/mine cart/etc. could recover to iron ingots
Gold weapons/tools/armor/clock/powered rail could recover to gold ingots
Obviously, the other material used in the construction would be lost, and I was thinking that you would only be able to recover 1 less ingot (or cobblestone block) as was required in the recipe in order to craft it.
In cases where the recipe normally yields more output than input (ie, the basic iron rail uses 6 bars and generates 16 rails), it would require that many that is normally required for the output in order to generate 1 bar less when recycled:
16 rails smelted yields 5 iron ingots (smelting wouldn't start until the requisite rails were present to be smelted)
In addition to being able to recycle excess materials to be used in other ways, this also affords a person to recycle their used tools/armor/weapons before they break and recover some of the original material investment.
Obviously... any enchantments that existed on the item would be lost once the smelting is completed.
=====================================
This suggestion is primarily geared toward smelting items for their metals, but could just as easily apply toward Diamond and Stone weapons/tools as well.
It doesn't make sense to use the furnace for wood/leather/string item recovery, and these are renewable resources anyway.

Well, majority of that is on the PC.. But.. because it's on the PC... good luck ever getting it on here.. Mojang and 4J work together about as easily as baking soda and vinegar.

Any type of mine cart would yield 4 iron ingots
