I don't know about you but I would love this. I like to keep my chests and inventory nice and organized as mush as possible but it takes a while to get everything all nice and organized. There should be an option/button when viewing in your inventory or chest that will organize all the items alphabetically. The hot-bar however will not be affected by this, whatever your holding will stay in the same place. I just think this would be a nice addition and make it easier.

Or by type first, then alphabetically, that way all your tools would be together, your armor and weapons would be together, your stone/sand/gravel/dirt blocks, your ores, potions, redstone components, minecarts/rails, MOB Drops, agricultural, food items, etc.

Yes by types too. Armor by armor, tools and weapons by tools and weapons and etc.

I'd like this.

I personally wouldn't use it (never did on Hexxit for the PC), but I can imagine that it would be useful for those who don't have awkward organizing techniques.
So yeah, but how would it be done?

Ok Phoenix, it would work something like this.

I'm going to use one chest for this example. You have a chest that is going to be used for food and weapons/tools. It would take the food and weapons/tools and organize them by type first (food all in a row then the weapons/tools). Then alphabetically by the type. I'm not sure if that made sense though.

No, no, I get what you mean. I've seen something along the same lines in Hexxit.
I don't not support it; I just have a unique way to organize everything that it wouldn't work for me.

How would the player cause the items to be organized--a button, a tab on the menu's side, something else?

Ah ok, we all have our own ways, I get lazy/bored/annoyed fast when doing a lot of storage stuff and getting things into place. Just a button/tab you would push A, while viewing in your inventory or a chest is what i'm thinking of.

I don't see that you really need much more than just a button. If the game had different ways to sort, that could be changed in the settings window. It would be nice if there was a custom sort option (for those of us that had strange ways to sort), but just the ability to sort would be a nice addition for a start.
