I say why not add actual Cannons, instead of complicated things with redstone wiring, repeaters, pistons, etc.
Just an actual Cannon you create in the Crafting Table.
Say... 7 Iron Ingots and 2 wooden planks to make it.
Reasons to make it. Mostly just for fun, perhaps decorations.. Maybe have it be used in some crazy fort defence games or something... It'd be great I think.

Have it be loaded with Iron Balls made with 1-2 Iron Ingots, packed with Gun Powder from Creepers and Ghasts, and ignited with a Flint and Steel or Fire Charger.
I was just thinking about that... My son and I just built a few ships in his harbor, and I was thinking to myself... You know what these ships need? Cannons. LOL
Active usable cannons that can be swiveled/aimed slightly would be cool, You would obviously need a separate canon interface when you went up and "Used" the cannon... but I'll take as decoration only if that's all that could be done for the time being..
I just use a Dispenser with Fire Charges in it. No complexity. All you need is 1 Dispenser, 1 solid block (wood or stone), a button, and charges....tada cannons

Yeah I realized that I could do that with a dispenser after I made it. But.. even then.. I say why not? It'd be a thing that would add a lot of comic relief, or.. decoration.
Yes good idea I've always wanted these instead of those big bulky obsidian cannons that rarley work

Cause I tried a few that I found on YouTube but.. they... didn't work.. AT all.
One in the video shot tnt like 50 blocks. But when I tried the exact same thing (well pretty much since I can't place Buttons on Dispensers, or have a dispenser pop out an entire block as opposed to a small block you can pick up) and it shot it like... 3 blocks, and then blew up and almost killed me.
