You really put as little effort into these as possible, huh?
Hiring NPCs has been suggested before, but I don't remember if it was here or in the PC section, or both.
Regardless it received negative feedback, mainly because it would be hard to program and make people even lazier.
Maybe special villagers -- a different profession from the ones we're waiting for. You could pay them an emerald per day, which is good until sunrise the next morning. The next day, they stand where you left them until noon waiting to be paid, in the event you want them to continue working for you, but don't actually do anything until you hand over the emerald. If you don't pay them and they're not within a village radius, they despawn at noon. (so you could take them back to a village before that if you wanted to have them available for hire in the future)
My main objection would be that these hirelings would essentially duplicate the function of tamed wolves. Wolves don't have to be paid, either.
Hm, here's an interesting twist on the idea: if you give your hireling an axe, he chops down trees, perhaps within a specific radius of where he was standing when you gave him the axe. If you give him a sword, he follows you and acts like a tamed wolf, but he's capable of doing more damage and taking more hits because you can give him armor, etc.
He'll trade an axe for a sword (or vice versa) but only of equal or better quality -- that is, if you gave him a diamond sword, you can't get it back by trading a wooden axe for it!
I suspect Stubby_Acorn is just trying to get his post count up, but I actually really like this idea. It's another way in which the 360 game could go off in its own direction, too.
