Works, I suppose, until you see a creeper coming, switch the item in your hand to a sword... and the lights go out.
indeed but as i had tried to imply this is a last resort after you run out of torches and your feeling lucky just bring out a glowdust (or Gstone) and if you know where the creeper is then its still easy to kill him in the dark. plus almost every single minecraft player has their gamma up to 100% so no matter what they will see him (just barely)
