Post TU13 I started a new world in Hard Survival and decided to take up residence in a village. I fenced it off and lit it up and have been fixing it up and generally providing a safe and prosperous place for my villagers to live and work in harmony.
The problem I keep running into is that I have to somewhat blanket the landscape with torches because I'm never exactly sure if a shadowy spot is dark enough to allow monster spawns. Since the village has a pretty mixed terrain it isn't always obvious even when I count the squares because objects and blocks create uneven lines of illumination and shadow.
Now, I know zombie hordes will spawn and that's fine. What I don't like is when I come around a corner and there is a creeper staring me in the face. Because I care about the aesthetics of my little town, I'd like to have the minimum number of torches with maximum spawn protection.
A neat item would be a Light Meter. This would be an object that would be similar to the compass or clock and would simply have an arrow that would point to RED (if monster spawns are possible) or GREEN (if spawns are prevented) This could be created with Iron, Glass, and Redstone. You would have to hold it in your hand for it to function but then you could walk around your world in the dark and directly test the effectiveness of your lighting grid.
Apologies if this idea already exists. I did do a forum and web search first.
Most baddies dont spawn at a light level of 7 or more. Torches are 14. So for minimal spawns place your torches no more than 7 blocks apart in a grid formation. You will still get the odd spawn on occasion but will be 99% spawn free. That pretty much removes the need for a light meter as it were, also, using said meter would be pointless as certain mobs eg; slimes can spawn regardless of light level iirc.
redstone torch is 8 I think.
When I'm messing with lighting, I drop a redstone torch if I think it's too dark. If it doesn't get lighter in the area, it's good. If the redstone torch makes a difference, I need to re-space.
As said before, use a grid of torches. If you're in a hillier area, I suggest 4-5 apart since the ups and downs drop the light more.
And this would only work for standard mobs--Slimes and most Nether mobs spawn regardless while Silverfish and Blazes spawn at light<12.

That's a great suggestion. I'll give that a try.
