I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks ghasts are way too like... powerful. I'm not even fully out of the portal yet, and here comes 3 fireballs barely missing me. You're basically just a sitting duck in the nether because you cant run from them either. Oh yeah, and they are very very annoying, and loud. Doesn't it suck when you die in the nether, and you have to go on a hunt to find your stuf... -while multiple ghasts are blasting you at will. Maybe they should be like less powerful, or maybe be neutral until provoked. I dont know.
Ghasts, quite frankly, are lousy shots. Their aim is usually a little high, so most shots will hit behind you. A good strategy to avoid being hit is just to move forward slightly as the fire ball nears you and parry your sword (possibly hitting the fire ball back at the ghast).
They are also actually fairly easy mobs to deal with - you just need to develop a "duck and cover" system. Firstly, the portal is easily protected if you take a bunch of cobble with you into the nether and make building a cobble guard wall a couple of blocks away from your portal a top priority upon entering the nether. This wall (if constructed properly) will deflect the shots aimed at you when you're going in or out of the portal. You can also use the cobble you have on had to quickly erect protective "blinds" as cover when you travel through the nether. You can also carve little alcoves, tunnels and other hidey-holes out of the netherrack where you can duck in to get out of a ghast's view. Leave strategic openings where you can take pot shots at them with a bow.
I would really hate to see ghasts nerf'd since they are pretty much the only mob in the nether that makes travelling about the nether at all exciting. Zombie pigmen are already a nether mob that is docile until provoked; blazes are formidable, but are generally only encountered near blaze spawners; and magmas are generally just not that tough to deal with.
I think ghast are fine as they currently are, though they could lower the sound that screaming noise they make does become annoying.
Actually, the one thing I detest about ghasts on MCX360 is the lowered distance for their sound effects; I hate the surprise explosions. Seriously, why have them make noise if you have to be right next to them to hear it?? Might as well just be silent with how stupidly low the sound effect distance is right now.
I wouldn't mind it so much if I heard their creepy wails and whining far enough away to know I have one to deal with. At the very least, they really, really need to make their firing sound effect have the same range as the ghasts do! So tired of having to look around blindly to find the ghast that's shooting at me.
The only problem is the sounds. Ambient sounds are too loud but I think a patch improved that but the sounds they make when firing have nowhere near as much range as the shot.
Ghasts can be avoided pretty easily. At least their shots can anyway. All it takes is to move in a different direction or even just keep walking. If in a battle with one and trying to take it down. I would have to say bow is a tricky shot to handle on them. Are their hit boxes small or something? I might just be getting a lot of lag and that is why I never hit them much unless they are in my face. ><
I have no trouble with them and they are not really all that powerful, just annoying in the numbers they spawn. Of course that is fine since a bit back if I remember correctly they spawned even more frequently. Which made more of a hassle than an annoyance. I would rather have the annoyance than a hassle any day.
Now like someone else said having to deal with more than just the ghast is a whole other story. Blazes and cubes seem to make fighting ghasts a bit more tricky. Yes cubes are easy to kill but the bigger ones seem to have a small hit box, unlike their cousin the slime of the same size.
I hardly visit the nether anyhow, and handling ghast I have no problems, it is the other things in the nether that worry me more. Or I should say keep me on edge. Something like that.:D

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
Blazes to me are the most hostile mob, never mind that they are extremely dangerous. They shoot mini fireballs at you, and deal a lot of melee damage. They are good shots, can shoot far, and ambush you. Still though, ghasts are more annoying than demonic. I liked it better when they didn't create fire everywhere they went. I have to reset the nether almost every time I go in there because of excessive fire everywhere.

One light tap as you go with whatever you have in your hand (bow?) and the fires go right out. Easy-peasy and certainly not worth resetting your nether each time. I bet you just like re-mining the easy-to-reach glowstone bits again and again rather than facing the blazes to get it.
I actually have a blaze xp farm and all glowstone comes from it. ghasts make the nether a crap hole every time I go in there.there is so much fire to put out that you might as well reset it.

However, your blaze XP farm would disappear every single time you reset the nether since it is a structure you build in the nether and not one originally generated by the game. The blaze platforms would return to their original states each time. I can only assume then that you prefer to rebuild XP farms rather than put out a few fires.

I think they're great shots... I can't stand it... then they hit you and you are on fire for like 4 hours.
There's also too many of them. They're all over the place.
And I've literally had 3 of them spawn right before my very eyes and all shoot me at once. Their shots all hit me.. and then let the areas around me for like 15 blocks on fire as well as me being on fire. So after that of course I did cause I was on fire so long even with armour on that I died. Was very annoying.
i dont have a problem with ghast except for the noise. I find doging and ducking and timing my runs very entertaining and fighting them is easy if you hit their fire charges back at them and hit them they die in one shot. But the noise needs to be toned down like a lot.

Take UpUp's advice. It'll serve you well.

ghasts + blazes = not a good combo
Other than that ghasts are easy to deal with

I stood perfectly still in my world and counted.
Two at once missed me 15 times in a row each.
Magma Cubes that hop in a straight line have better aim.

Then you are not resetting your nether as you claimed above. A reset of the nether would erase it, period - protected or not.
