(You only need to read this top part to know what I mean, the nitty-gritty details are near the bottom, you don't need to read that if you don't wanna).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The elevator idea:
This will be like a minecart, but goes vertically.
The elevator itself is a 2-block tall, 1 block wide box made with 8 iron ingots.
Pressing left trigger situates you inside this box. (Like a minecart or boat, but with a standing animation).
A new form of block will be used to attatch the elevator box to, these are normal-sized blocks with zipper-patterns on one, or all sides of them. You can place an elevator box onto these zipper blocks, which can then go up or down along them.
There will be normal zipper rail blocks, zipper-lock blocks, and super-zipper blocks.
1: Normal zipper-rail blocks function a lot like normal railing does for minecarts.
2: Super-zipper blocks, when powered, will push an elevator upward incredibly quickly, up to 40 blocks upwards before dropping.
3: Zipper-lock blocks, when not powered, will lock and hold an elevator that passes over it. When powered, the lock releases, and the elevator will drop along the zipper rail. only stopping if it passes another zipper-lock block, or the elevator runs out of zipper-rail blocks.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The elevator moves down the rail as fast as a player falling. But as you're situated inside firmly, you will not be killed inside.
The super-zipper blocks, when powered, will launch the elevator box upward with great force and speed, equivilant to a trail of powered rails, but only one super-zipper is needed to launch an elevator box up 40 or so blocks.
When you're inside the elevator box, and you're facing out of it. Pull left trigger to exit out of the elevator box, you'll appear one block infront of the elevator.
To use it properly, be sure to use buttons that are wired to the super zipper or zipper-locks (Preferably in a place you can press the button while inside the elevator box), rather than levers, which will make it not function properly.
That is all. The recipe for making the items above are listed bellow.

Item recipe. (Note: This refers to the crafting interface).
1: Oak zipper-block: 1 Redstone. (Center). 2 Iron Ingots. (Above and bellow Redstone). 6 Oak Planks (3 on each side).
2: Birch zipper-block: Exact same as above, but with birch planks.
3: Spruce zipper-block: Exact same as above, but with spruce planks.
4: Oak log zipper-block: Exact same as above, but with oak logs.
5: Birch log zipper-block: Exact same as above, but with birch logs.
6: Spruce log zipper-block: Exact same as above, but with spruce logs.
7: Stone zipper-block: Exact same as above, but with stone.
8: Cobblestone zipper-block: Exact same as above, but with Cobblestone.
9: Stone brick zipper-block: Exact same as above, but with stone bricks.
10: Sandstone zipper-block: Exact same as above, but with Sandstone.
11: Netherbrick zipper-block: Exact same as above, but with Netherbrick.
The reason for all of these varients, is to match the specific material or color-needs of the player. They all function the exact same, they just look different.
12: Super-Zipper block: 1 Gold ingot. (Center). 2 Redstone. (Above and bellow the ingot), and 6 of any of the above mentioned planks, logs, stones or bricks. (To make it with that appearance).
13: Zipper-lock block: 1 Slimeball. (Center). 2 Redstone. (Above and bellow the slimeball). and 6 of any of the above mentioned planks, logs, stones or bricks. (To make it with that appearance).
14: Elevator box: 8 Iron Ingots. (All around the center, none in the center).
Conclusion of Elevator idea. Possible other ideas bellow (Maybe).

Pretty sure this has already been mentioned a lot before, but I'd like some clarification: Why can there not be Redstone placed on the side of a block? .....Going upward, or sideways. It would definitely create much more flexibility. =\ (Unless a block of Redstone can fulfill this role, we'll just have to wait for it to be available).
I think this is an awesome idea and mojang and 4Jstudios should incorporate this into the minecraft xbox 360 edition version. Seeing how a lot of people like making large houses or mansions or what not, this would be an awesome idea. I'm for it. Great job on the idea and look forward to playing the pc version of minecraft when you can get it
Ughhh..... I'm too lazy to read all of this. You have like two pages of information. I'm going to just say ok and back away slowly from my computer. Usually well thought out ideals like this end up in the back of the void, because 2 hours later you will have like 5 lock threads and 20 crappy suggestions / repeated suggestions. So yeah
This definitely would not have much similar coding as the minecart, but still an interesting idea. I like the elevators I can make with redstone at the moment. this would shorten that in the fact that it is directly an elevator. Either way decent enough to be considered in my opinion.

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
(Feels giddy inside from positive support). <3 ^-^
One thing to clarify: The zipper railing is not a placeable rail like minecart railing is. The zipper rails are full-sized blocks, with zipper patterns on all sides. (: The elevator box. (Which is slightly taller than the player). is all shiny irony-looking, and when placed with it's back or either side against the zipper-block, it kinda latches to it, like minecart does to railing.

In theory, with the zipper-rail blocks, you could have up to 4 elevators hooked up to one column of zipper-rail.
Support, I really hope that this idea gets incorporated into the game as an exclusive for minecraft xbox
