I'm running out of easily accessible sand in my world, and would like to see a way to make more. Here's what I was thinking: Using the workbench, we could crush stone or cobblestone to make gravel, and then (still using the workbench) we could crush that gravel even more to make sand. Similarly, we could use the game's vegetables to make compost (a.k.a. dirt), or melt stone to make lava. I think that making more blocks renewable would help solve the limited resource problem caused by having small worlds.
Sand and gravel are...infinite...but apparently disclosing how is forbidden....
Dirt is...vast. I don't know why anyone would run out.
Lava is too since we can reset the Nether infinitely.
Yes they are in some circumstances But we need an official way to produce more gravel and sand Well mabye not gravel because i HATE gravel so annoying when mining And dirt some peoples world Unfortunately spawns them in a HUGE desert biome i had problems when making a new home world because i kept spawning in huge desert biome And lava i dont care for lava i also HATE lava i gotten 32 diamonds and when heading back home i mined some redstone and it updated a floating FREAKING GRAVEL BLOCK god i hate gravel so i had to restart from my last save and find them all over again

Gravel is also infinite because it also spawns in the nether... and, as you point out, the nether is infinitely resettable.
I agree, there is a TON of dirt on any world (even ones with large deserts and even survival island worlds where land is seemingly scarce). All one has to do is go underground for it.
There is also a LOT of sand in any world. In fact, the OP isn't saying that he's literally running out of sand - just "easily accessible" sand. Well, with a Respiration III helmet, the sand at the bottom of the ocean floor is quite easily accessible. You don't even have to worry about mobs attacking you as you mine it... how much easier can it get? (You can also mine a lot of dirt off the ocean floor). If you don't have a Respiration helmet, just place some doors or sugar cane on the ocean floor to create breathable pathways you can run back and forth to or use a water bucket to catch your breath.
Rather than making sand infinite by crushing gravel into it, I think I would rather they first make glass somewhat reusable (i.e. allowing it to be recollected with a silk touch pickaxe).

I thought you could get glass back with a silk touch pickaxe

Maybe, if they changed it again. I honestly haven't tried it for awhile. You used to be able to get glass panes back at any time, but they eliminated that and for at least awhile silk touch wasn't working on glass or ice. I'll check it out for sure when I get home tonight.

yeah the reverted to where all glass slik touch has no effect... Glass is useless due to that. Always have to be careful with my glass, as I don't really like smelting more sand just to get glass. Now I just use pistons to move glass around for the moment.
I agree that it should in the very least be doable with silk touch. Don't know why people long ago actually said no it should not even with silk touch. Old post that probably caused this...>< *sigh* I really would like a way to reclaim both types of glass....
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.

I thought that this kind of stuff was silk touch for (taking any ore in its "ore" form, taking grass blocks, cobwebs, ice, glass, etc)

Silk touch on the 360 doesn't currently work on cobwebs, ice, and glass. It does take ore in its ore forms and does enable the collection of grass blocks. Hopefully, they will enable it for cobwebs, ice and glass. One place it works where the PC doesn't is in collecting tall grass as tall grass (oops, I think that's shears... I'll have to go check... Yep, that's shears, so ignore that last bit.)

I didn't know this
