If you feel like this is too over powered please tell me how it is over powered. To me this seems like a more useful solution to potions. Potions can be helpful, and would be more powerful than a spell books spells at max potion level.
Okay. This probably sounds ridiculous right? Well I'm just throwing an Idea out there take it or leave it, at least I'm trying to give 4J Studios some Ideas.
Okay so here is my idea: A Spell Book. This book will have spells inside of it. I'm not for sure what kind of spells 4J would implement but I have thought of some very plausible spells. Here they are,
1. Being able to control the weather. You can make it rain, and also make it stop raining. Same for snow!
2. Being able to shoot fire balls, similar to what the Ender Dragons fireballs look like.
3. Being able to confuse your enemy, which makes hostile mobs start attacking each other and lose focus on you.
4. Being able to poison your enemy.
5. Be able to shoot a spell that harms your enemy directly.
6. Be able to slow down time.
7. Be able to slow down your enemy.
8. Be able to knock your enemy back.
9. Be able to breathe underwater for a limited amount of time.
If you like these spells, or if you don't. Tell me! If you also think of some spells that seem reasonable and likely to be implemented (if this feature is added) then please tell me and I'll add them!
Upgrading and Acquiring Spells: If you just made a spell book and already had all of the spells that wouldn't seem fair. So I thought of a system to make things a bit more fair.
Just like enchanting a pickaxe you would do the same thing with a Spell Book. You would use your enchantment points to buy and also upgrade your spells. But there's a catch! Just like with weapons and tools the enchantment you get it random. So that means the spell you get would also be random, but after you get a spell you can upgrade it all you want! When you use a spell there is a recharge ratio, and when you upgrade a spell it makes the recharge ratio shorter.
(I don't know if this has already been thought of, if it has I'm sorry for accidently stealing your idea.)
I like this idea. I'm always in favor of adding interesting features for mages and whatnot. I have a couple of suggestions:
-New Item idea: Spell Desk- a new item that functions similarly to the enchanting table while maintaining it's own mechanics Can be made from wood, books and Lapis blocks (to give Lapis more use and also to make the item look distinguished). I think it would also be nice if it took up 2 blocks, like a bed, and looks like a writing table with books stacked on one side, maybe.
-Spell Desk Interface: Items to be altered can be placed in up to two slots (a stick with lapis/diamond/etc. on it can make a wand, for instance, or ink and paper for a ward), and spell components can be placed into another set of slots underneath... These would determine the effects of the spell. I was thinking there could be room for 2 or 3 components, with many of the components having multiple possible effects.. making it possible to create all sorts of spells! Finally, depending on the powers and items used to create your magical artifacts, you would use experience levels to create the final product, just like enchanting.
-The use of magic: how you employ the spells would be varied and dependant on what type of item you create...
WANDS: as I've already suggested, you could create wands from sticks and some other material (lapis, diamond,???) as a "focus", which could determine how many uses/charges you can get out of the item before it runs out of juice... It may even be possible to save the depleted item and refill it using more experience points at the spell desk... Wands would shoot a ray or projectile that "detonates" on contact.
Possible effects: harm, poison, severe/area-affecting knockback, transform (hostile mobs into peaceful mobs), fire (like the enderdragon's breath, not a fire charge), heal (yourself if no target available), slow, petrify, teleport, ice damage (enderman and nether creature beware!)
WARDS: I wasn't sure how else to name this, but these would be pieces of paper covered in symbols (created with paper and ink sacs) that cause temporary/one-shot effects where they are placed. Being consumable items, these would cost a lot less xp to create and allow for some interesting or entertaining effects. They would either become active by redstone, mobs passing over them, or a moment after being placed. The method would depend on the effect...
Possible Effects: sanctuary (forces all mobs away from spot for 7x7 sphere around ward, prevents projectiles and explosion damage as well. Lasts 10-15 seconds: holds off danger for enough time to reorganize, heal and form a plan), Heal Zone (standing within 2 blocks of ward offers regenerative effects), spring trap (launches enemy 15 blocks up in the air), Lightning trap (calls lightning down on spot when enemy passes over it... open air required, beware of creepers!), Daylight (creates 7x7 sphere of level 15 light that burns undead mobs like sunlight would, lasts 60 seconds), Phasing Trap (whatever block this ward is placed on acts as if it isn't solid to anyone except the spellcaster, making for excellent deathtrapped bridges) Phasing Entrance (like phasing trap, but reversed... blocks effected are solid to all EXCEPT the spellcaster, makes for great sectret entrances)
As you can see, I've got plenty of ideas... But I'll have to come back to this later... I'm not sure how easy any of this would be from a programmer's perspective, but it's still fun to dream.

From a programmers perspective adding that many spells would seem troublesome. However, I like the idea of adding a wand, this is how you would use the spells you learned. I like the Spell Desk Idea also, instead of using the enchantment table you would use this desk. When you used the Spell Desk it would also show an animation of your character flipping through books as if he was actually studying and trying to learn a spell. You also thought of some plausible spells, for instance: Harming, Poison, Knocking back you enemy, slowing your enemy, and instead of shooting out a fireball that looked similar to a fire charge it would be purple and more mystical like, like the Ender Dragons fire balls.
Edit: Also instead of spending enchantment points on the wand to re-full it, I would feel like the wand should be able to break like a pickaxe or sword, and that you should just use enchantment points on the Spells and there upgrades!
