Obsidian is harder than steel, but it is brittle. It was good for tools and weapons.
Blades are a few nanometers in size, so that is pretty frigging sharp. Everything about it is better than diamond for tools and weapons, other than the fact that it is the strongest thing on earth for what mankind knows. there is probably something obvious that is stronger, but we don't know. it is used in some surgery because of it's sharpness.
Ok it seems pretty tough.
But in gameplay reasons I see it as making diamond pointless untill you need more obsidian.
The idea of diamond is that you might run out, Im not going to say that the idea doesn't make sense because you can already make solid diamond pick axes from 3 different diamonds.
But for balance reasons I find that things better than iron should be rare.

I put my shirt on one leg at a time, just like everybody else.
Maybe make it like budder in the way where you need diamond to obtain it, but it is like an iron pickaxe. It should take a while to mine blocks, but last a very long time.
Hmm... It may be approved, but it IS extremely easy to find and make, but you WOULD need to have diamond to mine it, so it has to have more durability or more power than the average diamond sword.
Infinite uses (to imitate hardness/durability/whatever else) but it's as slow as wood (showing heaviness I guess?)
You can't enchant it though, so you're stuck with a slow pickaxe. Sorta like a backup if you get stuck or something. Iunno.
Efficiency four should be like wood efficiency two. Still enchantable, just not as big a difference. Just something I can rely on that is renewable. No infinite durability, that would be OP

Seriously you haven't run out of diamonds and iron yet.
Just expand your mines.
If you only look in caves, make some mines!
From my experience you don't even have torches in your caves and when it's daytime and my gamma is so low I got lost in 20 seconds.

I am a surface dweller. Take out enchantments like fortune and silk touch. It should be able to mine obsidian fast, just everything else slow.I could find diamonds no problem, but I don't go down there enough.
I don't see the problem with adding another tier, I mean how else do you get obsidian with out mining it with diamonds
Or maybe another suggestion would be to where you could put a tool in a crafting table and put obsidian at like a point to "enhance" it

I got it! It can be overpowered in all if at least one part of the tool is like living hell to get! I was thinking, instead of sticks, how about, wait for it, Blaze rods! Like living hell to get, as the mob that drops it is extremely hostile and extremely dangerous. Peaceful players can't even take advantage of obsidian tools in this case.
Give them the durability of iron tools, resulting in many trips back to the nether.
For me that wouldn't be worth the hastle.
I find mining obsidian very time consuming and risky.
Especially in the nether where there's ghosts and other monsters around and the lava lakes seem infinitely deep.
I would much rather have a neat organised mine, set up cool looking supports, finding slime spawns, getting diamonds getting coal and getting iron.
Infinite cobble.

Exactly. It is almost not worth the hassle if they make it like that. That would be the point. Spend hours mining diamond or bear living hell to make obsidian tools. I am a hardcore survivalist. I find that it would be easier to kill monsters over parts then to mine for it. I am a surface dweller. I spend as little time down there as possible. I even have methods of getting obsidian without going underground. I have more blaze rods than sticks. This would be my preferred tool tier. It would be the worst for some, but the best for me. I can't be the only one.

Stone is harder than wood.
Iron is harder than stone
Diamond is harder than iron.
Your argument is invalid.
Don't forget that half of those are technically stone because they're diamond ore (even though you get the diamond on its own) or iron ore etc.
