Don't these dirt rooms in abandoned mineshafts look empty and kind of boring? Perhaps, since there's a bit of room in there, a new boss mob could spawn in these rooms! Cave Trolls!
Each dirt room would have a Cave Troll in it. They wouldn't exactly be "a boss mob," but they would have about 35 hearts of health and would give you awesome stuff when killed.
They have 3 attacks. The first is a swing with their war club which does 2.5 hearts of damage. Their smash attack would deal 1.5 hearts, but would knock you back about 7 blocks, unless you hit a wall, which would add another .5 hearts to the attack's damage. Their third attack would be picking up stone or dirt and chucking it at you, causing 3 hearts of damage if it hits you.
The Cave Troll is 2.5 blocks wide and 5 blocks tall. If you kill one, you will be greatly rewarded. They drop 1,000 XP, 2 gold ingots, and 3 troll skin, which can be made into a super strong armor, almost equivalent to diamond. As a rare drop, they drop their war club. It can't be crafted, so you'd be lucky to get one. Another troll respawns 20 minutes after it dies.
What would be the best way to beat one without losing too much health? Bring a whole lot of iron blocks and pumpkins. Iron Golems will attack Cave Trolls, although the Cave Trolls will kill an Iron Golem in around 5 hits. At least they will distract the monster.

-The cave troll could drop his Club as one of the Rarest drops
-The cave troll could also drop his head which you could place as a block with a torch in it, the same as pumpkins!

Not a fan of new armour, but I do like the idea of something spawning in there, though the damage should fluctuate depending on the difficulty.
And a 20-minute respawn would be rather quick for 1,000 exp--200 mob kills.
Maybe slow it down like you previously mentioned.

Different... Would be nice minus the armor bit... Although I don't think the height would be fine, as some of those rooms are not even that tall... I have run across some that are only 4 blocks tall... and others that are 8-10 roughly... (of course that latter bit was on an older map when mineshafts first came out... Unsure if that has changed since then.
Then again these places could be adjusted to accommodate at least 5 height... Maybe 4.5 for the troll or even 3.5, as all you really need is a look up effect when up close in personal. Enderman after all are 3 tall.. hmm... You also want it to move around in said room, otherwise it might suffocate in the ceiling for being exactly as tall as the room, if not suffocating not moving, which makes for a far too easy kill with melee.
Other than those points I actually like the idea.:D

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
It should also become immune to splash potions and arrows when its health is down to 50 % health. it should also have a weakness to fire.
Actually, splash potions should only do 20% of what it normally does to other mobs. Arrows will only do 1 heart of damage when the troll's health is at 50% health.
I do like this idea very much. But, like techdolphin said, I do agree that the respawn should be rare. I also disagree with the new armor.

I've never come across the ender dragon yet and as it is now I feel like the game is lacking bigger enemies.
Then again these places could be adjusted to accommodate at least 5 height... Maybe 4.5 for the troll or even 3.5, as all you really need is a look up effect when up close in personal. Enderman after all are 3 tall.. hmm... You also want it to move around in said room, otherwise it might suffocate in the ceiling for being exactly as tall as the room, if not suffocating not moving, which makes for a far too easy kill with melee.
