Gold tools, as we all know, are practically useless considering their very weak durability. Golden pickaxes can't even mine iron!
Im proposing that golden tools have special abiltites. Being that these tools have a low durabilty and that gold is a little difficult to come by, these tools wouldnt be over powered.
These are what i think the buffs should be on gold tools:
Pickaxe: A chance to give more than the usual amount of coal, redstone, lapis, or diamonds. Also, a chance to give you two or more golden nuggets when you mine gold ore. (it would essentially be a pickaxe with the fortune enchantment but with a high chance of of dropping more than the usual amount of loot with the added bonus of gold nuggets)
Axe: When you chop down the bottom of a tree, it would act like the forestry mod for the PC, dropping all of the logs, apples, and saplings immediatley afer the bottom log is mined out.
Sword: More XP is dropped from mobs after they are killed.
Hoe: All crops planeted on soil that is hoed by a golden hoe will grow faster than normal
Shovel: A higher chance of getting flint from gravel and a low chance of a grassblock instead of a dirtblock when a grassblock is mined (Same goes for mycelium)
Pickaxe: It can't mine any ore outside of Coal. Having a 10~25%ish chance of 2 Coal would be interesting, but not worth it.
Axe: Too OP. Maybe having it as an enchantment exclusive to Gold, but Gold isn't insanely hard to come by, and an unenchanted tool could gain hundreds of logs if used exclusively on large trees.
Sword: Makes sense considering it's the same as a wooden one.
Shovel: Flint, meh. Grass and Mycelium, sure. I actually like that concept.

the pick axes could be buffed to be able to mine the same as iron. i like the exlusive enchantment idea, prehaps the enchantment would lower the durability even more still?
The golden hoe should also allow a 1% chance that plants planted on it will grow instantly. The axe however should only have a 5% chance of acting like the forestry mod.
