ya and someone mentioned useing slab floors my question is how does that help when they don't put out any light and light time i checked there is no glowstone slab
light is able to transit through transparent blocks( pistons, leaves, enchanting tables, ect). You can get creative and hide lighting in ways many people might not have thought of. I do like that sound of that invisible block that can still emit light, just how would you remove it tho if you no longer wanted it?

ya but that don't always help because if you have a room that is 7ish high the middle is gonna be darkish because no matter what you light that area with the light will run out before it gets there (and i mean the between the floor then the roof) not the middle of the room)

i just meant you could have the lighting hid in the floor..not just in the ceiling...
that is all fine and dandy till you want to light up a big open area covered in grass
get creative... make a pattern with transparent blocks and hide glowstone underneath... im not saying an invisible lighting source wouldnt be awesome...just our creativity and limited materials is all we have to work with right now..

thing is I can't do that with what I am making the ground NEEDS to be grass.

try hide lighting in tree's then?..idk what you're building so i cant give the best suggestions.. but if it must be grass and nothing close to it then there is no real way to get sufficient lighting without it being obvious.. at least as of now...
I have to put torches every 5 blocks through my castle just so creepers don't blow everything up.
And they still do.
I'm not sure how there's still hostile mobs spawning in my castle but its very annoying as its meant to be a safe haven.
Yeah thats really annoying, I dont think lighting has anything to do with that they just spawn in LARGE areas with plenty of room to walk about. :/
you could use redstone, there are several was to do it. like this; http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1857462-wall-lighting-horizontal-block-swapper-tutorial/ (i was able to turn it into a horizontal version) or by simply putting down a pattern of glass (best if the pattern simply outlines a pathway), put glowstone two blocks below that (or wherever, even put on the side so the yellow isnt visible) and set up some sticky pistons connected to opaque blocks below the glass to block lightflow. yoou can turn them off during the day.
or just skip the redstone, put the glowstone on the side below the glass and the yellow is not visible. you can further hide it by extending a piston (the light will travel through the end of the extended piston without you having to look at the glowstone.
Yeah! My town looks like crap with jack o lanterns everywhere. Hostile mobs still spawn in there. It is meant to be a safe haven. It has a wall and everything.

easy fix 1st make shur nothing is made of wood and/or flammable items (like wool) then dig the ground down 2 squards put down a layer of lava and a layer of glass. the lava will not only give you enogh light to stop spawners but it will also give the floor a cool look

You are wrong, mister.
Mushrooms do produce light (brown) go to a creative world, brightness up, make a dark place, and place a brown mushroom. Ta-Da!
