In many parts of the world fishing is a Major source of food.
This makes me wonder why fishing in Minecraft is such a small part of the multiple ways of getting food.
Some ideas I was thinking about was firstly the very often suggested fish mobs.
There could be many different types of fish some common, some area specific.
My first idea was to integrate and iron fishing rod, however this iron fishing rod will not be an ordinary wood rod with better durability. It will have a sinker aswell as a floater which should sink to about 10 or more metres below the surface reaching new fish.
So you can't just run around punching fish (all the time) as soon as you enter the water fish should very quickly swim away your range to hit them can be improved with a spear
Another idea is lobster /crab pots which can be placed on water, leave a bobber and quickly sink to the bottom ready to trap lobsters and crabs.
Catfish could spawn in swamps and maybe rivers.
Old fish model could be named trout which is fresh water fish I think so it should spawn in rivers and landlocked lakes.
Other ideas.
Sharks,
Bigger boat model,
Rebreather,

Seriously... I think fishing isn't a bigger part of the game merely because of the time it takes to fish... and the likelihood of a creeper sneaking up behind you as you concentrate on watching the bobber. I also think that is how it's intended to be in the game. As it is, it's something that is readily available to you if you're desperate for food (i.e. you can get fish out of any puddle in the game); but something that most people probably wouldn't do a lot of in favor of more exciting things (like killing the animals for food or devising automated wheat and melon farms). If they wanted fishing to be a bigger part of the game, adding more fish varieties probably wouldn't do much. What they would need would be to allow a way to farm fish so all the redstone builders could get excited about it.
That said, I wouldn't mind if they did had more fish varieities and made it such that there were actually visible in the water. I'm currently doing survival island seeds and the days are rather quiet once I clear out the night's worth of hostiles... The only movement about are the squid and, perhaps, watching for the trees and wheat to grow... and watching my bobber for signs of fish.
I am just 50-50 on this as I don't really fish in the game. Unsure about the variety of fish you could catch, but I do agree there needs to be more ocean life.
I prefer them just bringing forward the modifications from the pc edition that they did to fishing, and that would be good enough for me. Then you could get fish more often.... Then again I still like the way it is now...><

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
Lobster pots would be something you can leave and come back to for a meal.
Maybe rod holders would be good aswell??
I want to make the fishing interesting not keep it time consuming and boring.
You can leave your farms, why not leave your rods?

i like it. i would love more improvements for fishing bcuz i lik playing survival island and no peaceful mobs bcuz of the ocean biome. so i fish and i would also like seeing the fish in the water also.

Yay a positive post.
I'd love casting with my rod then sticking into rod holders I'd have hanging off my jetty.
Maybe they need to hold onto the rod longer aswell if that is the case, so you have time to run over to them and reel em in.

Y thankyou good Sir.
Maybe you could also distract sharks by throwing fish at them.
They'll take about two seconds to chew on it allowing you a headstart in any escape.
They will pursue fish from 11 blocks away like hostile mobs.
They will only pursue the player from 6 so it can be used to get their attention without jumping into the water.

I also agree with you. I think this is creative imagination (the way the game works). I think fishing should be improved on. Maybe an iron fishing rod has a faster % of catching fish. +1
I like fishing and its fun to do in minecraft. Maybe if you use an iron fishing rod you can catch bigger fish (theoretically) and they regenerate more hunger

YES! i would Luv it.And if you kill a shark you get bones and mayb fish. and add shark teeth and add shark teeth to arrows to make them hav more damage when shooting a bow.(psst Your welcome kind sir)
Did I post anything about coral? I remember other people's posts from old threads about coral.
It should be different coloured and grow like the snow cover when spreading across sea rocks which should generate underwater like boulders or parts of rock beds.
After the first stage it goes to half slab then after a long time it turns to a full block.
Two other types of things should also grow there.
One is sponge, which should have a 10% chance of spawning on any given coral block.
The other is a block like sugarcane but grows underwater, somebody try come up with something along the lines of that.
All non solid blocks should appear as though they are in the water by having the transparent water textures around them instead of a water resistant force field. I wouldn't mind that < on underwater chests aswell.
