I did search the forum for "mail box" before posting. If already suggested, please post a link. I also think I saw a mod for this but can't find it now. Also please post a link.
In but OMHO this would be a great addition to multiplayer. If fosters community, lets admins send public notices, lets users invite players to events and so on.
It would function like the Ender Chest. Anyone can open it but they only see their own messages. When opened the box has two areas and acts like email: Outbox and Inbox
Messages would be written using a Book and Quill. When placed in the Outbox, two email like fields that would accept a comma delimited list; Send To: BCC to: From: Would contain the player name and can not be edited.
The Inbox would hold a limited number of messages like a chest. If full, messages are returned to sender.
Crafting could be like the Ender Chest but using a Book and Quill in the center.

Yes I know there are mods.
/tell and msg only works if users are online. This would work with players that are offline. They check the box and get there messages.
I like the idea, but I honestly am not a fan of stuff in the game that is MP only. I like that it has a cost (book and quill), and I agree with above suggestions that it doesn't need BCC and such, just TO: would suffice I'd imagine. Perhaps make comparators output a redstone signal of strength equal to the amount of mail in the box (capping at 15)?
So I'm torn. If this were to be given an SSP or adventure map use, it would have my support~
On a server where chests can be locked, you can use one as a mailbox. Make a hopper feed into the chest and anybody who wants to leave a message can write it in a book and throw it on the hopper.
Using what's basically an emailprogram sounds, I don't know, inappropiate for the Minecraft world.
Alright then, if we're gonna let hoppers affect chests, let me put one under your chest into my own. Meanwhile, mail would be more secure and safe.
Didn't think of that. I was assuming a worldguarded place where somebody else wouldn't be able to place a hopper, since that's the kind of server I usually play on.
Ahh, that would make sense. But for a modless alternative, this would be pretty good...
I don't see the point of this when you can simply go to someone's house and plop down a chest with a book in. And wrong section, should be in Suggestions
The server world I play on is 10000 x 10000. Unless you have teleport or warp, traveling to someones house can take minecraft days. Going through the nether is faster, but if all you want to do is say "Hey friend, Can we meet at spawn on Wednesday around 6pm GMT. I have the stuff you wanted". Traveling there to hand deliver a message is not likely to happen.
As for message security, since this works like an Ender Chest, anybody can open/view the box, but only their mail is visible.
I agree with the BCC and CC options not being needed. The point of this foster community.
The Xbox has chat and messaging built into the OS. I miss that on the PC. I just want to be able to
1. Invite someone to join me,
2. Arrange community meetings,
3. Let people know about some cool new site/build that has been created.
4. Invite friend over for a party... etc etc.
and so on.

You might want to check the mod FriendOverlay, and get your friends to use it as well. It allows for a lot of the stuff you're talking about to be in game. Just a heads up

Seems like it would be very fitting. Also it would give paper even more uses.

Or just simply chat to one another.
As I said This would work with players that are offline. Hard to chat with someone offline, unless you use the psychic connection :-)
