Have you ever wanted to make some sort of safe house, but it was never actually safe?
Well, that is why I think locks and keys should be added to Minecraft. There could be a new crafting table: a locksmithing table. To add a lock to a door, you would have to use the Locksmithing table. A door would be an ingredient, as well as iron or some other resource. Once you have the door with a lock, you could use the Locksmithing table to create a matching key or keys (Haven't figured this one out yet).
I know iron doors are already available, but this feature could possibly save many players a lot of resources. But what do I know? What are your thoughts or criticisms?
The possible recipe could be Door in center slot on top with an iron bar/ingot to the left and right in the center section and a dye between the iron bar/ingots

That would be for the key.
What I was thinking it having a color assessment to the lock. That would be 16 different locked doors you could make. The key is made separate. Also in the graphic you would be able to tell which door would be for each key, and vice-versa. This method would probably require another table in a way and look like a tool box. (Whether it is wooden or iron tool box)
If not another table, that would be a long scroll, like the wool section. Then again it could go into the redstone section possibly, but that wouldn't make much sense beyond the fact that doors are usually redstone compadible. So possibly in the decorative section otherwise.
I really like this idea, but that would be an awful lot of block to create. At least we would have colorful doors, if not at least the locks would be colored.:D

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
Technically a house would never be fully "safe" unless it's made out of bedrock, since people can just mine around the door (or break the door itself) regardless of a lock. Also, the ability to make a color-coordinated key to lock/unlock the corresponding door would render the whole system useless, since it would be easy for anyone to go "Ok, blue door, I'm gonna go make a blue key..." and then they would have access to your locked room.
Personally I'd suggest a new type of door that has a lock/unlock option, only accessable by the person who placed the door. If you place the door and toggle the lock, then nobody except you would be able to unlock it. Or it could be a door that doesn't specifically have a lock, but can only be opened by whoever made/placed it. Maybe make it non-breakable like bedrock so that people don't just smash the door to get in.
Overall, the nature of the game (the ability to break pretty much any block) makes it impossible to have a truly safe room. If you have locked doors, it would STILL operate on the "please don't mess with my stuff" honor system, and in that case you might as well just put up a sign that says "Keep Out" above the entrance and hope for the best.

Actually to add to that, there could be a limit on the keys. Like 1 can only be made. That way once it is made the icon would grey out so you could not make another one until:
1. the key is tossed and despawns.
2. the key is destroyed in some way.
In this way it wouldn't render it useless, since you could see which keys were made by the icons in the menu being greyed out like some stuff you don't have enough materials for. Or it could have a notation saying 1 of 1 key in world in the description of it, if not both. Still like I said it would be limited on how many type of doors you could make to 16 due to there only being 16 dyes.
Doors will be able to be made in any amount if you want.
To open a door, you would have to either have the key selected on hot bar when you go to open it or simply have it so you can lock/unlock the door at whim long as you have key selected on hot bar.
Seems feasible for a adventure map at least.:D

whats the point in having piston and redstone to make locks if your just gonna use a key ?
takes the fun out of what minecraft is about
Not everyone is a redstone magician.
Not to mention if somebody wants a simple store.
But people keep robbing you.
You want it to look like a store and not a fort.
Redstone takes up alot of space.I have an idea for whoever suggested colour coded keys aswell.
By simply adding 3 colours instead of one the chance of that key being replicated decreases steeply.
I feel that there should also be a reinforced locked door backed with iron and obsidian.

oooo now that sounds like a nice looking door, or well at least would look better than a door only made of obsidian...:D
O_o color coded keys... hmm... wonder how that would work, that would be a lot of graphical stuff to put in. Although the key itself could have a part of the graphic an alpha channel like how grass does, so the color would be technically based on programming instead of an endless combinations of graphics that would need to be added. I do like the idea a bit better than the solid color one. Figure I would add how they could go about adding the content itself, graphic anyhow...:D

perhaps making a door that only person could destroy it is the one that makes it an he is only one who can open an close it. it would deter some people. locking chest be nice maybe 4 number password

Maybe just add a lock recipe and then do a shapeless "Door + Lock" combination (like soup and books).
Stay fluffy~
