So I've been thinking about the boring grey color of stone and how we could possibly get slight color variations for stone. My idea is to add a marble block and a basalt block. They would both work as a regular stone block would, when you mine it you get a cobblestone version of the block, then you can smelt it to get the stone version and use that to make stone blocks. You would also be able to craft stairs, slabs, and walls from these materials. So that's my idea, it would be great if anyone added on to it.
As much as i like the idea of marble and basalt.... having it do all the things that regular stone does is a bit much, and just sounds like a copy cat. The main thing I didn't really like was wall block, unless of course they do something different with them. After all you can only have so many of similar colored grey bricks...><
Basalt being blackish and marble whitish(usually) that much I do like. Having a cobble variant I think would be good since we only have 1 cobble stone type in the game. Would be good to have stairs/slabs of these as well.
Different types of lava too, like basaltic lava, which generates basaltic cobblestone, and granite lava, which generates granite cobblestone. Basalt lava should be thicker than normal lava, granite lava should be less thick, almost like water. All randomly found like normal lava, but biome specific. Mountain biomes should have granite lava, and ocean biomes should have basalt lava.
Also, volcano biomes. These would generate basalt for the whole surface, and the volcanoes, just a giant basalt mountain with lava pouring out. Nothing more than that. This would be a small biome though.
Marble should be craftable into columns, so we can have some classical architecture in Minecraft, rather than the Romanesque-only game that Minecraft is.

Even though the lava idea sounds good I am not so sure I like it or not, but I do see why it is a good idea and could be useful for cobble generation.

I like the idea of basalt volcanoes and marble pillars, but if quartz is ever added to Minecraft the pillars would have to look different.
This seems like a good idea, I've always wanted different colored stones that are either pretty much solid like stone or textured in some cool way. Something colored like this: http://thumbs.dreams...62292QDzJO8.jpg and maybe even a canyon or rock desert biome, or a Volcano biome that was mentioned earlier.
I would like to see blocks that contain crystals. They could be mined like ore, and 9 individual crystals crafted into a block could shimmer and have the iridescent glow like enchanted tools and weapons. This would make a beautiful block to build with. The crystals could have other purposes as well like a pitcher for milk, bowls for muhroom stew, and maybe introduce glasses that could stack in your inventory so milk can be carried with you stacked in case cave spiders are attacking in groups. There could also be a special health or stamina boost for drinking a glass of milk and eating a cookie together. The glasses and pitchers could also be combined with apples to have apple juice which could be a health boost as well. Also crafting the crystals with either torches or glowstone and a button could make a lamp and / or a chandelier. I would sooooo love to see crystal blocks!
*edit* I just realized I didn't describe the rock in it's raw form - it would look like iron and gold ore except the specks in the stone would be white and light grey and would also shimmer. Instead of smelting these blocks can be broken down into crystals on a workbench, which can then be turned into the items stated above.

Well they manage to get the upside down stuff in, I actually wouldn't mind seeing these either..:D
