Hello I there how many of you are tired of having to wait so long after your friend goes down a rail before you can go? or you are using a chest cart and you need to keep running it back and forth because 1 chest isn't enough and more than 1 just bounces back and forth???
well then I have a solution for you connecting minecarts by connecting minecarts i don't mean they grow into a big one like chest do when you connect 2 i mean you place down 2 or more minecarts and between the 2 minecarts will appear a small connecter that hold the 2 together (untill you mine them up) and when you push one it will push/pull the others with it.
It's good for if you are going mining and need more than cart (ex. your cart, chest cart, furnace cart,) or if you wanna take friends down to a mine just place all the carts down have everyone hope in and go you no longer need to worry about being bounced back because you hit the person in front's cart at the end or for if you just want to make a train out of minecarts
Normally I'll stick like One Furnace Cart about 4 Chest carts and Then another Furnace cart and send it on it's way.. It works quite well and is able to go back and forth.

normally if i send more than 1 cart down a rail they will hit the 1st one when it reaches the end and bounce back. and that is IF i can get them to all go down at the same time (if i try sending them down and sending them at the same time they just send like the 1st few and bounce the rest back)
Well if you have a furnace carts at both ends, both moving in the same direction, you will not have a bounce-back problem. they will keep each other in a nice and tidy order. Though! make sure the "destination" has half slabs or full blocks surrounding the carts.. so when they hit the "end" they don't derail somehow.
I don't use rails so much anymore, however when i did it was before the furnace carts would properly push anything, however not that they do it is much more convenient, however, connecting the carts would be the best solution so long as it doesn't cause glitching when making sharp turns.

well with it glitching on sharp turns it might be on occasional thing (you know I didn't think about that) just because Minecraft isn't perfect and dose have a tendency to glitch when doing anything
I can see connected minecarts being useful for timing and programming redstone contraptions, among other things.
I used to think the same, until I figured out better ways to time redstone machines. I always wanted a proper train in MC, though. I would love to see that happen.

This is what I do and they never derail.. Furnaces carts surrounding Chest carts.. and slabs around the "departure/arrival" areas and you'll be good.

Support my suggestions. Make the game better!
Plus maybe make a new type of track that will connect and separate them depending on if it has a redstone signal or not would be helpfull
