Yes placing torches inside your mine is vital to being able to see and stop monsters from spawning but what about those moments where your just tunnelling away and it gets darker and you just so happen to miss some rare ores? Headlamps or something like that a miner would wear would be a cool idea. I just think it would be a small but very neat feature with a big impact on the game to show how detailed it is. Any other ideas or gear just post it!
I don't think this could work because lighting in minecraft is static in the same way sand is. Sand checks whether the block under it is air only when it is updated to avoid lag. Pacing a torch updates a few blocks around it but a handheld torch probably wouldn't
