When you hold a torch they emit as much light as if they were placed on a wall. This would allow better cave exploration without having to constantly throw down torches just to see.
It could be implemented as a unplaceable lamp instead, which would only be used for "held light".
It would also be awesome for dropped/tossed torches to make light, but I could see that being to taxing on the system.
I think torches emitting light when held is a good idea, but believe they should emit less light than when they are placed.
As far as the dropped torches making light, what about a flare type item you could throw that would emit light for 5 seconds or less. Could drop it down a dark ravine to see how deep it is.

Both of those are totally acceptable alternatives. Really even if a held torch was half as bright I'd be happy, and the example you gave is exactly the scenario for "flares". It could be could if they could be thrown about the same distance as a snowball.
I like this idea sounds like it could work but I would like an update where you could hold two items at once
that is a good idea I mean you have 2 hands in the game and in in real life you have 2 hands and use both of them not just 1 even if you only held stuff in the left hand like a shield for fighting and a light source for mineing and not be able to actuly be able to place stuff with it i would be happy because the problem with adding the 2nd hand is that fact that we use the entire conroller as is what would we do to controll the 2nd hand and place stuff with it? to cycle thru it we could change it to where the left hand you hold LB and move the left joystick to change the block in the left hand and in the right hand you hold RB and move the left joystick (you hold the Bumper for the hand you want and use the joystick to cycle left and right)support to all above ideas
I would support this, it seems like a cool idea; but to be honest, I don't think the Xbox would be able to handle it. I feel like there would be issues like the lighting glitch all over again, only worse. It would be much worse, especially since you're always moving and that would cause the light to need to update constantly, which would most likely cause lag, especially with splitscreen or many people on the server.
