I have absolutely no idea if this is feasible, but I had an idea to add dragons to Minecraft. Now before you say, "dragons don't belong in Minecraft" or something like that, here's a tweet from Notch himself, stating his desire to add red dragons to Minecraft:
https://twitter.com/...154763351818240
EDIT: This is an old tweet. Dragons may not ever be added to Minecraft for PC. I was using the tweet to show that the idea was there, and it's not absurd. Sorry for any confusion.
So anyway, here's how I think it would work:
Spawning and behavior:
Dragons spawn about 1% of the time (day or night) in extreme hills biomes. They are red and look like the Enderdragon, except smaller.
They are aware of you up to 16 blocks away, but are neutral until you either attack them (in which case they will always be aggressive towards you) or you come within 8 blocks of them. You can approach in that 8 block radius without making it mad if you hold a diamond in your hand.
When they're neutral, they stand on the ground calmly and walk around like most other mobs. When you aggro one, it will start flying around and try to attack you. You can be damaged by touching it (like the Enderdragon) and it will breathe fire in a way similar to Ender acid, except when it comes in contact with you, it sets you on fire. They would fly slow enough for you to escape if you so desired, to prevent being stuck in a fight with a dragon when you don't want to.
Combat and drops:
Dragons have 50 hearts of health (100 health points, same as an iron golem). When killed, they will drop 0-1 (or maybe up to 2) diamonds and 0-2 dragon scales.
Dragon scales can be crafted into dragon dust or dragon scale armor. Dragon dust would be used in potion making to make a potion of invincibility for 15 seconds, which can be extended with redstone dust to 30 seconds. Dragon scale armor is as effective as chain mail armor, and has infinite durability (the damage reduction isn't fixed, I feel it shouldn't be too strong, yet it shouldn't be weak either).
"Taming" dragons:
Dragons would be tamable to an extent. Not to the point of blind loyalty like wolves, but enough where they will allow you to ride them from point A to point B. This is done by offering a diamond to the dragon (which is why I mentioned they'd stay neutral up close with a diamond in your hand earlier) like you would to a wolf. Once it is "tamed", you can place a saddle on it and use LT to get on it and fly around (sorta like a flying pig). The controls for flying on a dragon would be similar to flying in creative mode.
The dragon, unlike wolves, will not attack mobs for you. The only mobs they will attack are mobs that happen to attack it, mainly skeletons that just happen to shoot it. It is also not as loyal to you as dogs are, so if you hit it, it will turn aggressive towards you. When killed after it is tamed, it will drop its normal drops, in addition to the diamond you gave it and the saddle you put on it.
So anyway, that's my idea. I know it's a long shot, but I hope it's a decent enough idea to be considered.
EDIT: I added a poll so I get an idea of how people stand on this idea.
Sounds like notch already has the idea in his head, I have seen mods on the pc with things like this. A modded enderdragon. I like it, I don't care much for the idea of riding it.
It actually seems pretty equalled out for a mini-boss mob (for once).
Maybe the armour shouldn't be infinite. but more along the lines of 2- or 3x that of Diamond (3,000~4,600 hits).
It doesnt matter if Notch wants it. He doesnt work on Minecraft. I also dont think Mojang or 4J have any ideas in adding more dragons. 360 doesnt even have the first dragon yet.
What? That's is a rediculous statement. He and jeb are friends, I doubt jeb would push aside anything he wanted to have in the game. And if 4j wants to emulate the PC as it already it, at some point it will follow suit in some variation.

I was actually thinking of making the armor 2 times the durability of diamond, but then I figured people would just think "oh, I'll just use the diamonds I got from the dragon and make the stronger armor... So if we're making the durability 3000, then I suppose we can bump it up to diamond strength to make it a little more worthwhile. And as for the the first part of your post, thanks. I was aiming at something that would be balanced.

The tweet about Red Dragons in the OP was from October 12th, 2011. It's been over a year and a half and the PC does not have overworld dragons. I highly doubt they ever will. There are many ides that Notch began to work on, only to never have them see the light of day. Same goes for Jeb and the rest of Mojang. They frequently have ideas for things, work on them for a bit and then decide not to add them.

From what I read, Jeb wasn't too interested in the idea of dragons, I just used that tweet to show that it's not an absurd idea and that Notch himself liked the idea.
The only problem I see with this is implementing it. This seems to me like a big thing that would take up a large part of an update (if it wasn't DLC) so in order for it to happen it would need to have a lot of support. However, if it was DLC, I would gladly pay a couple of bucks to add this to my survival game.
You did in a way that's balanced and gives good rewards for both fighting or taming the dragon.
Plus infinite armor would be really awesome, you don't get a lot of protection but it's always there.
But there is only one problem, would they destroy overworld blocks when flying?
Because if they do, well... servers without protection are partially [email protected]#!*#!..
That sounds nice for a PC mod! but it needs a WAY higher spawn chance
I was thinking of a higher spawn chance, the problem is they have too great of a drop to spawn TOO often. In addition I didn't want it to be an annoyance to anyone who happens to be walking by. Maybe have a 2% spawn?

Like I said before, I was kinda aiming for something balanced. But no, they would not destroy overworld blocks... though maybe I could have them destroy blocks from the End and/or the Nether?
I would not have the option to ride them.
They should see you up to 100 blocks but only aggro within 16.
Dragon scales can be used for a Fly potion (instead of invincibility).
They drop a random assortment of ores - iron, gold, etc, with diamonds being rare.
I like the idea, but I would prefer something like this be a check box option, that would oddly enough be in the options menu somewhere. That way I could turn that specific feature/mob on/off if I so desired.
I have enough problems with the locals at the moment, including the animals/villages, to even add the thought of another aggressor type to the game that has the ability to fly and dive bomb you....><
After all I am not a pure survivalist, I am just a survival builder.... If it is too challenging I simply don't play, or well.... loose interest too quickly.

That's fine, I wasn't definite on the invincibility. I had just seen a thread that included an invincibility potion and I thought it would make sense with how tough dragon scales are.

With dragons being so rare, I figured people would want something better than iron or gold as a reward, as much sense as it would make. If they were more common then that could be a possibility.

That's why I made everything the way I did. With a 1% spawn rate, it's a rare chance you'd even see one. And they aren't instantly aggressive, and if you do make one mad, they should be slow so you can easily run away. But with the way I think they'd be coded, they would despawn if you get too far from them after making them mad (like how a wild wolf only despawns if it's aggressive, since it then counts as a hostile mob and is subject to hostile mob despawning).
That was the big thing for me: that they're an option if you want them there, but easily escapable if you don't. But I like the idea of the checkbox for them... maybe if other rare mobs were included with this they could all be grouped together with an option to disable "rare mob spawning".
ah... i.c. Well either way still good in that respects.
Still though the check box for rare mobs, that would be a good option indeed. For now that would mean just this rare dragon breed. I did understand the passive aggressive part, as that was reasoning that I suggested the check box. Makes sense though to run for it to despawn. What I didn't catch was the slow movement you mentioned in the above post. That would make it pretty easy or well simple, even if it does fly around.
I just hope it is not block destructive, as we have too much of that with enderman & creepers. I don't mind if it sets things on fire, as long as long as they fine tune the fire spread option to include the dragon breath. Assuming it sets things on fire...O_o Not really sure what the acid does from their upgraded original that is coming out in the end soon. However it being small it would make easier to escape and sometimes difficult to spot if not flying towards you...lol
I do like the idea though as a whole, just looking for a variety of options to make the game the way I want to play it, so that the game itself keeps that play it your way style.

I have a general dislike for "on-the-fly" options when it comes to mobs. The option to enable/disable mobs (any mob) should be for new world generation only.
@Purplemonkey
Sorry if my earlier post was terse - I like your ideas overall. Having the dragon see you from a further distance makes it that much harder to run from. Basicly dont get close unless youre willing to fight (should also be able to hear the dragon roar up to 40 or so blocks away so you dont accidently aggro it). Having it despawn once aggro is great - if you manage to escape.
The 1% chance is fair. I would say they should also spawn under any light level.

Or you could stick them in the long forgotten sky dimension!
Maybe dragons in the nether aswell?

I've never been in the end.
But it's already boring.
I need the Sky dimension!
