I was playing with some mates today on a server and we were playing with splash potions. Then we played with snow balls and realized they have no real big place in the game.(besides making snow goloems) So we thought it would be cool if you could take the potion effects from the potion and transfer the effects into snow balls.
So on impact the player/NPC would obtain the effects. This would make snowballs have a purpose and make more accurate hits on victims. Also it could be made into a snow goloem which throws the infected snow balls.
Ask me if you're unsure about anything or if you need details. Sorry about incorrect spelling.

What i mean is whoever has these effected snowballs, is a target due to the power. have 2 stacks of 16 effected snowballs, one poison, one weakness. With these you could never be stopped. especcialy with the fact that they are just snow, which is easy to get. If you can get a nearly endless supply of potions and snow and know how to use them, you are very very deadly. Im thinking an option in multiplayer to disable these snowballs, but only an admin.
I hope this doesnt let your hopes down.And sorry my first post didn't get to in depth with it! And plus it wouldnt be 'infected' because that makes it sound brutal, i like 'effected'

Nahh mate all good, you have a great point, drawbacks are being thought of. But It should be available to be disabled on servers. The crafting of it hasn't been made yet.

I like the term "infused", or even possibly "injected" or "imbued". Or, if you want more views on this thread you could even call them Potion Impregnated Snow Balls or Potion Interjaculated Snow Balls. They all make a bit more sense; I don't like "infected" as it suggests the snow balls are harmful, which would not always be the case.
Question: Do these snow balls still have the splash effect? It would pretty difficult to get a direct shot on a moving target, especially at a distance. At the same time, if they do have the splash effect, they were pretty much pointless in the first place. I just played with them for a little while, and the snow ball's trajectory isn't much less drastic than that of the splash potion. Splash potions have plenty of range, much more than you actually need. I also did some other tests, and potions are just as accurate as snow balls. Go throw some at a wall for awhile and observe the spread.

To answer your question, no they do not do spread damage. I guess that makes them more stealth based, sneaking up on a opponent and taking the shot. No matter if snow balls have the same distance thrown as a throw able potion, they still go further.
Also you do have the right idea, infected sounds off. This is just really a test to see if people like the idea, if it gets good results, i'll update it based upon people opinions and ideas.

Don't get me wrong, it's a neat concept, it just needs some work. As it stands in its current stage, I would rather use the regular splash potions. The only thing superior about the snowballs is range. But that doesn't really matter when you can throw either of them out of render distance. At a practical distance, you would only have to aim just slightly higher to hit the same spot with a potion as you would with a snowball.
Yeah sorry for only posting the downsides.
In single player, if you wanted to, you could make a mob trap using these snowballs so lava and water is no longer required... well to get the drops somewhere you need water.
I have the idea for crafting, my example would be just here
[crafting table]
S= snowball, P= poison potion, B= bucket, X= nothing
X P X
X S X
X B X
Potion on top, snowball in middle, bucket in bottom.
my idea to increase the strength-
[crafting table]
S= snowball, P= poison potion, B= bucket, X= nothing, D= diamond
X P X
D S D
X B X
even though you can have any strength potion with the snowball, put diamonds in to EXTREMELY INCREASE THE POWER OF THE UBER POWERFUL SNOWBALLS OF DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!
Hope you like the ideas! (replace the poison potion with whatever you want, it will still work not only with poison)To clear it up, you can put a 1 strength potion in and have 75% of the effect, but put a stronger one in, it will have a little lower but it can all be brought up by using diamonds! with these diamonds you can make THE UBER POWERFUL SNOWBALLS OF DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!OH! a new idea! put a splash potion with in the crafting and when the snowball hits the ground, SPLASH POTION EFFECTED SNOBALL OF UBER EPIC DOOM OF ALL WORLDS N' STUFF!!!!!!!!!!!
Throw a splash potion on snow laying on the ground (like found on the floor of snow biomes) and change its color, and give a small amount of that effect to whatever walks on it, for about 0:30.
So on impact the player/NPC would obtain the effects. This would make snowballs have a purpose and make more accurate hits on victims. Also it could be made into a snow goloem which throws the infected snow balls.

Actually... snowballs damage blazes.
Or make some snow blocks out of them. Yellow snow?
Eat the yellow snow...
It will make you big and strong.
Well Thats not a big part of the game, its just a small weapon. I just want them to be a little more useful
What do you mean?
