ok so i made a mob platform 25 blocks high on a platform that is 18x18, so its not to big but the problem im having is that spiders dont always die when they fall. i tried making it a highr drop by digging down into the ground but then no mobs even fall. my question is, is there a way to kill the spiders while still maintaining a 25 block high trap?
Spiders can climb on any walls, so they often climb down part way... and so survive the fall. There are two schools of thought on what to do. You can make the inside of the gravity grinder in such a way that spiders will not spawn at all inside it by locating columns inside it only 1 block apart. This does cut down on the available spots for other mobs to spawn as well but it does keep the drop rates flowing since spiders climbing all the walls near the drop point can prevent other mobs from falling (clogging up the grinder and slowing it down). Another school of thought is trap the live spiders at the bottom of the trap so that you can safely kill them with a sword or bow. I do this by leaving only 1 space or even just 1/2 space openings at the bottom of the trap so that I can get at them with a sword through the opening but they can't get out to attack me. If you close off the bottom of the trap in this way, you will need a way to either channel the drops to you or a quick way to go in to collect the drops manually. If you opt for the latter, be sure to time your entrances into the trap carefully so that you don't take damage from various mobs falling on your head.
