I think if bone meal is put on a soul sand nether warts should appear (like bone meal and dirt). This will make it easier to get nether warts, which are almost impossible to find.
This is also great because it does not require finding the rare nether forts, which may not even have nether warts.
This is a pretty cool idea. I've already cleared my Nether Fortress of all it's Nether Wart, and was wondering what someone does if they run out of Nether Wart. This idea would solve that problem right away.
As for Nether Fortresses being rare, that is not the case anymore. Every world generated after they were added will have one, albeit the generation is still a little funky and may cuff off the Nether Wart. When Title Update 9 is released, older worlds will also have access to Nether Fortresses with the Nether Reset that will allow the Nether to generate again, spawning everything from later updates.

You replant it. Nether Wart grows like wheat. Just put it back down on the soul sand and it grows again.

Yes, but even still this would make it easier to get nether warts (which is my target) some worlds still don't have nether warts. I could make a brand new world after the bug fixes and still not get a nether fort with nether warts.
Yes you could argue this is invalid because of the nether reset ability, but the day I'm uploading this is 3-15-13 and the TU9 is not released.
Your comparing Nether Wart to Wheat? Great. But you forgot that when you break wheat, you get two things, a bundle of wheat and seeds which you can replant to get more wheat. When you break 1 Nether Wart, you get just 1 Nether Wart. What the OP is suggesting is you use Bonemeal on Soulsand in the same way you use Bonemeal on Grass blocks. When you use Bonemeal on grass blocks, you get grass, which in turn gives you the seeds which you can plant to get wheat.

You may want to check your information. Nether Wart does not drop 1 Nether Wart when broken. Like Wheat dropping seeds, it drops anywhere from 1 to 4 Nether Wart. You're probably breaking it too early. It must look like the one on the far right in order to yield more than 1 Nether Wart in return.
I have a Nether Wart farm in my Nether. If Nether Wart worked the way you said it does, that farm shouldn't exist.

That is becuase it is still broken and bugged. 4J has acknowledge that their attempt to force a Nether Fortress, Blaze Spawners, and Nether Wart didn't completely work. Once it is finally fixed and working, you will always have those 3 thing in the Nether.

Quick tidbit- in order for Nether Wart to grow it has to be planted in the Nether, Nether Wart wont grow in the overworld.
I kinda like this idea. But I mean it wont be implemented until after TU9 is out, at the latest, so by that time you'll have Nether reset and it wont matter too much. That being said it's like an idea I had to bonemeal sand and get cactus and boanmeal near water and get sugar cane. Though I kinda scrapped the idea as I've seen less and less complaints about the lack of stuff spawning.

I'd love to say that this could be considered cheating.... But it's not like it's exactly hard have a pandemic of the stuff after planting it a couple of times.
So for the sake of it.. I say sure. Because either way you'll end up with a chest full in no time.
Why all the resurrection of these ..... really.... really..... old threads?
I think the natives are just getting restless for the next update. I actually don't mind some of these old suggestion threads getting revisited. This one came about when there was an issue with some of the fortresses not containing netherwart back when netherwart was supposed to spawn only inside nether fortresses. Instead of implementing this suggestion, however, 4J opted instead to allow netherwart to spawn in outside the fortresses... basically on any soul sand in the nether. Since they did that, I've not really seen any complaints. I did scope out one nether for someone once that had very little open soul sand and, as a result, very little netherwart... but we did manage to find some eventually.
Well since you can now have nether wart farms in the overworld (assuming you import your soul sand from the nether and and your nether wart seeds) a lot of this thread is way out of date. One of the last comments before this was resurrected was:

which is, I agree, no longer accurate (it was accurate at the time). As I said, though, the suggestion was made to solve an issue of some world seeds that had fortresses not having any netherwart at all because some of the fortresses were spawning at the edge of the nether, the staircases were gettting cut off and there was no netherwart. 4J resolved the issue by allowing netherwart to spawn in the nether on any soul sand. To address a similar issue with older worlds not having fortresses at all, they brought in the nether reset. The change allowing netherwart to grow in the overworld was a change that was eventually imported from the PC edition (in a later update than the one the brought netherwart into the Xbox Edition)..
Does the suggestion still have any merit? Probably not much, but there are some people out there, I'm sure, that are playing on old worlds and who don't want to reset their nether because they've built their own castles, etc. This would be a way for those people to get netherwart into such a world and preserve it's survival status. In reality though, without blaze rods, netherwart has little purpose... so they would also have to make an adjustment to allow blazes to spawn in the nether without a blaze spawner (which was also a suggestion made back at the same time as this one). However, I don't think either suggestion will likely be acted on at this stage in the game... but it does serve as a reminder as to why we should, perhaps, still be able to reset our nethers without losing the survival status of our worlds.
This is also great because it does not require finding the rare nether forts, which may not even have nether warts.

Yes and by the time your idea was ever programmed, tested, bug fixed, cert tested, and released TU9 would be out.

Sorry.
I was just curious to see what else the 360 section had.
Was just bored/curious.
It's a good idea, but that would be also like bone meal + farmland = wheat seeds.
I get most of my minecraft mods from banners .-.
