A new type of piston that comes in normal and sticky but the telescopic pistons can only move 1 block and can extend up to 12 blocks if there is more then one block in the path of the piston it stops the piston from extending further
As to the blueprint for this piston i can't think of anything right now
hmm... not sure i understand correctly. doesn't pistons move almost that amount anyway? or are you saying that it can move that 1 block further, like extending to push this block if within that 12 block range.
I could see problems with this if not regulated somehow.
If it is the second one all you would have to do is add a repeater to the mix. Then when the piston is created you would see a tick positioning on it to adjust how far you want it to extend to meet the block. hmm...

But yea i suppose a redstone repeater type adjustment switch could be used to make it extend to certain lengths maybe this piston could be more then 1 block big to account for the length of the extension and so there is room for an adjustment switch maybe have it be 1x3
instead of a bulky switch there could be 11 redstone lights on the piston that are all on when first placed and when the piston is clicked the lights would turn off one at a time until the piston can only extend 1 block clicking again would turn all the lights back on that way the pistons could still be stacked like the normal pistons
hmm... so I did think it correctly.. well for the most part... Lights... hmm *thinking* well could be on the sides all around. Each face on the sides would have the lights. The back and the piston side would not. That way you could tell from what ever side you usually place the piston. Reason I mention not in the back as that is the usually connection point, and most times a block is placed there when set horizontally, and it would be sitting on a block when vertically.
I don't really think there would be a need to make it bigger, as I think you might be able to put the lights all on 1 side. 3 rows of 4, or 4 rows of 3. Which ever would work better. Having that redstone glow to them...lol
The design might work with the repeater being part of the crafting, but with the lights maybe it could be a torch or just redstone. Like how the sticky pistons are made, but have the piston of choice to modify in the center and surround it with redstone/torch. if the repeater would be used then 3 would be used; 1 to each side of the piston minus where the slimeball would be. After all the repeater does have 4 ticks each and 3 would = 12 total, well to some degree it is sound. ><
Anyway that is an idea at least...:D

Well it really only needs 11 lights cause if it had 12 and they were all turned off the piston wouldn't do anything it would just sit there
As to making the size of the piston larger i was thinking the crafting recipe would involve 1 or more normal pistons plus the parts to make it extend further and for the redstone or torches or repeaters or whatever
I would go with lights cause like i said it would make them stack just like the normal pistons the only problem is you'd have to make sure they are all on the right setting before you bury the pistons with other pistons it would suck to place them then forget to set the extension settings and have to remove the pistons in the way to set the extension length
So i guess it would need lights on the back as well as long as the pistons can be adjustable and stack like normal pistons they'd need to make the lights part of the suface of the piston so nothing interferes with the piston placement or the wiring for the pistons

And yeah I see your point. That was the reason I didn't mention the back, but still would be a good idea to have it the way you describe. All surfaces except the piston side itself. that way it could be adjusted from almost any direction. Having the lights part of the surface is what I had in mind anyway. As it would be best to have something like a repeater to still function when pointing at any of those sides. So that does make sense. 11 lights might do the trick. Like you said needs to have at least all off for the lowest setting...lol

just trying to think of any contraptions that this would be good for and how it would be implemented
hmm... wouldn't think it would be instantaneous from 1 to 12. hmm... might be a bit off in calculation, as it would probably do like the delay that a repeater would do... That is .1 per 1 space moved. If don't that way would it be too slow? or just enough. For me that would be fine, as it is something I just thought of offhand while reading your comment. Never thought about that yet...lol

Didn't think about speed of the piston it would be great if it was instant but i know that would be unbalanced i think a 4-6 tick delay fully extended wouldn't be bad
Althought if the piston was adjustable the speed could depend on how far it is set to extend like 1 tick per block extended

That is pretty much what I was thinking... especially after it was mentioned. Can't believe I actually didn't think of it before my last post...lol
But should work or function in that way. Although with how the pistons are naturally now we can only hope not too many problems are brought in with them. Still they have a few bugs/glitches to iron out per say with pistons.

Just thought of this.
Maybe they could have a high speed piston capable of launching the player a set amount into the air.
Different piston extension lengths could determine the height you reach.
Good for cannons aswell.

hmm.... that does sound interesting... That would be it would have to be instant up to the block it would push. Any air between said block and piston would be insta push. That is how I could see that being part of it. When pushing a block it would have a tick counter of how long it would take to push said block. This would definitely change the way it would work, especially change the redstone signal tick calculation as well.
But I'd say that is an interesting add on to consider, at least for entities... Where blocks are concerned would be best to have the other formula to some degree. Variable launch... that could add to an item elevator in essence.. Well it's an idea...:D

the problem i see with this is the standard piston have issues, so not sure these would even work properly
plus what your explaining you can do with the standard pistons, just have to have blocks inbetween
as i said before not sure what ability you would gain from these ?
Well actually it is to push a block from further away. Where as normal pistons can only push a block in front of it. This would push a block that is 2-12 air blocks away. Hence it being able to push a block further away. So in that way it would be different. I do agree though that it would bring other problems, as pistons themselves are not ironed out yet per say.
