Probably brought up somewhere but I would like to see Point to Point portals to jump around the map. Dunno about you guys but I get bored walking around and or building tracks everwhere.
Essentially the idea is a cross with a nether portal with some sort of control box with a interface ala Halo with the teleporters offering like 8 channels for portals to be linked.
If you haven't played halo or used forge the teleporters can be set up so that one teleporter set to channel "A" will teleport to a receiving pad or another teleporter also set to "A".
I can see the newest structure being built amongst people towns or city being a Portal Nexus with 8 portals side by side. However instead of obsidian maybe made out of diamond block and a control block, also diamond block, with blue effects.
Whatcha think? Definitely should be applied to PC if it hasn't already.
It is not balanced enough, you need something to make it costly to use these portals. I've seen a suggestion before that had Ender Pearls as fuel. That would be balanced, as Endermen are few and far between in the overworld.
it would be nice to link specific portals by surrounding them in lapis, gold or some other rare mineral.
it would give me something to do with stacks of gold and lapis.. :/
I like this idea. And it's not truly overpowered if you have to actually build specific portals that are linked out of a specific material. For instance, diamond only links with diamond portals. Lapis only links with lapis portals. The rarer the material, the farther it can send you.
In example (the numbers are just rough ideas)
An iron portal can send you to another iron portal if it's 50 blocks or fewer away
A lapis portal can send you to another lapis portal if it's 100 blocks or fewer away
A gold portal can send you to another gold portal if it's 200 blocks or fewer away
A diamond portal can send you to another diamond portal if it's 400 blocks or fewer away
An emerald portal can send you to another emerald portal if it's 1,000 blocks or fewer away
This way, it really is expensive to build the portal systems. It would require a total of 14(all 14 blocks must be present, unlike nether portals) blocks of whatever it's made out of. That's a total of 252 of each material to be able to set up the portal system. That's a lot for people that don't mine for hours on end. Although, the distances would have to be increased quite a lot in order to make it more attractive than using a simple rail system.
Or, what could be done is make the 10 blocks for the sides out of obsidian and the corners out of the iron or diamond. As the distance increases, the number of blocks is increased. Instead of 10 obsidian and 4 diamond, a diamond portal would require 7 obsidian and 7 diamond. Obviously, it would be very difficult to code, but it might be worth it.
Anyway as to what the person above me said, it would be nice to have distinct variable range that depends upon the material used. I really like that. The only way the last one would truly be ever used is corner to corner at the moment though... Unless the person was referring to the max range that material can go to. that would work I suppose.
What I would like to add is the fact we have dyes. No matter what type portal we use the way to link them could be color coded. That would means 16 for each type of portal. And with each type of portal, maybe the portal itself could tell you the color by being the color you used to make it.
That is a lot of portals...>< Anyway at least 16 would be fine, since we have that many colors. So either way still a good idea, even if it is sci-fi sounding, it could very well be magically inclined as well...lol

You're right. I was referring to the max range. And the numbers were just an rough idea. The world size would have to be increased for it to really be effective. Otherwise, a simple rail system would be a much better idea. This would be more useful on the PC version, for servers where people are really spread out. That way, people could instantly visit their friends 50,000 blocks away. I know that's an exaggeration, but it could happen.
I like your idea, because it opens up the possibility for quite a few portals, a whole lot more than my measly 5. However, it's too easy to get them without some sort of fuel source, similar to Fevi117's ender pearl fuel idea. There should be some balance between expense and usability. That way, one really has to think about the pros and cons of using them. That way, rails are still feasible, yet so are the portals.

hence the reasoning I actually liked the idea you had with the many rare blocks... or well not so renewable ones that is being used for the base block, even if the portal as a whole wouldn't really look all that great. In a way I am not fond of some of those blocks. I love the lapis texture, but don't like gold, even if it is a good texture...lol Diamond is so-so and difficult to get it to look right in a build. At least in my opinion. Still in that way it makes people think (well the ones that are concerned with looks along with function) about where and how to implement it into a design.:D
unsure of a fuel source, as I would probably build both regardless of the fact. I love making minecart systems...lol and portals will just add another way to get somewhere if I want to take it. Actually the 1000 block thing could be done, as you have to consider height in that equation too, but at the max distance it would have to be near the corners at either side. So in a way that would be the one to make for anywhere in the map per say, while the rest would be shorter distances from place to place.
Right now though with the limitation in block count... The fact that anvil is not in place at the moment. Unsure if that was the reason beyond the block increase, but at least was at the same time. So right now having multiple style portals of 16 different colors, might not be feasible. However technically there would be only 16 colors for the portal itself, which can be reused graphically for the rest.
I did have an idea on the frame though. It concerns the resources used. Like example diamon portal, being the longest it could be just in the crafting menu as a portal frame. That is imagine how you make a chest but replace the wood with the blocks needed and the dye would be the center piece to designate which portal belongs to what. 8 diamonds + 1 dye = 1 portal frame. To make the frame it would have to be similar to either the size of the end or the nether portals.
unsure of the diamond blocks, but that might actually help balance the idea in that. 8 D.blocks + 1 dye = 1 frame. That would have to be built like the nether portal to be fair to the players. after all 9 diamonds = block 9x10 would mean 90 diamonds or 126 max depending if you go for the 10 or 14 block portal, and that is just 1 portal... double that for the amount needed for the set to link. To me that is a lot, since it takes time to find all those kind of resources, especially that many...
It is something I just thought of to keep it more balanced as on the xbox those kinds of resources are finite, even if you could get more with fortune now. I think they reduced the numbers in the last update though, not by much granted, as the stuff is easily found if you look hard enough...lol
