I would like the ability to collect and place the desert plants and maybe some other desert plant options in survival mode and maybe they can create two or three when broken like real cholla cactus. I live in the Sonoran desert and love the desert biome that was created it just needs more ability as far as terraform goes.
I could care less about the new plants giving drops other than to reproduce themselves .
Suggestions for new plants :desert trees either a willow or mesquite
prickly pear cactus
barrel cactus
in game saguaro ability to grow arms like real cactus also ability to grow tall like
real cactus
san pedro cactus( I dont think you will do this one its hallucinogenic but pretty and the general form is what I am talking about )
an agave type cactus like aloe or blue
while I dont care about drops as stated earlier cactus have all types of medicinal ,food, and resource properties in real life, and I realize the game is not intended to be real but something more than a tall barrel cactus that gives green dye is desired by me and probably more

Red sky at night, sailor's delight.Red sky at morning, sailor take warning
Anyway I am always for additions to the biomes, as right now desert seems to be barren for the exception of an occasional village. Right now there are lots of cactus and those dead bushes, but sparsely spread out among the sand. Would be nice to see some more variety in the sand. I don't know about the willows, but more I was thinking palm. Like those water holes you see, just having a water hole with a palm growing near it for an oasis would be nice for me.
Your suggestions are good too, although that might be too many cactus, maybe just expand the cactus we have like how oaks have several ways they grow. In that way the cactus would have various combinations it would turn into...:D
The aloe plant I would love to see. I know you don't care about drops, but I like to see at least some purpose for them. The aloe can drop a aloe leaf that possibly can be used in potions, or used to heal half a heart or something like that... Regardless most plants like this should be obtainable through shears, as intended.

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
I agree that the desert could really use more than just the sand and few cactus that it has so far. It would be great to have the aloe as Tamorr suggested that could be used in potions or just for healing. In the seeds I have been using there is often water in the desert so the addition of palm trees or something similar to indicate an oasis would be nice.
I do have to say that I would like to see more villages spawn in biomes other than the desert. It seems as if the majority of them are there or on the coast partially cut off....at least in the last few dozen seeds I have seen.
All in all this is a great suggestion and would add some diversity to the desert that it currently lacks.

what great feed back so far and I REALLY like the palm tree idea
no the shears do not pick up the dead bushes you can only place them in desert biome in creative or as a shrub in non desert biomes in creative ,I am also not sure why there are two different names for the same thing on creative ????
I am guessing to differentiate between dry and wet biomes... So that they have their own bush thing... That and later when they add jungles fern will be available if not already, which I doubt.
Hmm... I guess they have not put that feature in yet then, but eventually shears are suppose to gain those bushes/shrubs...

I'm thinking Colorado Plateau (Utah) meets Valle de los Ciros (Baja) meets the Kimberley (Australia):
flash floods: monsoon desert where rain brings randomly created water source blocks that disappear when the storm ends
baobab/elephant trees, boojum trees, mesquite trees that cause damage...
sheer walled canyons 10-20 blocks deep that cut through a gently rising hill (not a ravine that spawns near surface in vanilla) bottom of canyon more lush than regular above-ground desert
gravel or cobblestone arroyos/washes
hills covered in boulders (1-3 blocks high)
I like existing biome mods but they're forest heavy and have often have to much extreme terrain.
